| partners | | When I did roughly the same hike a year ago the temp reached 98°, but with the weather staying reasonably cool I figured Tracey could handle this hike even with a late start. Thanks to the dark clouds moving in near the end of the hike the temperature stayed a full 25° cooler than last year.
Last year Sycamore Creek was bone-dry so I was able to do a full loop last year, unfortunately, there was enough flow in a few key spots so we had to back-track several times, making the hike end up as a lasso-loop.
Not too big a deal except the part we had to retrace was a lot of steep ups-and-downs in deep ruts of loose pea-gravel, which is Tracey's second biggest nemesis behind fox-tails... thankfully by staying ON-trail they weren't an issue today.
The only wildlife were reptiles... literally hundreds of common lizards, one patch-nosed snake (which stayed motionless except for a wisp of the tongue even when I touched its nose) and a similarly motionless horned lizard.
While the patch-nosed snake was alive-and-well, the horned lizard was a bit worse-for-wear. It was alive but had been run over by a motorcycle and appeared unable to move and was baking in the sun.
Tracey had never seen the petroglyphs up the hill from where we parked so at the end of the hike we scooted the hundred yards uphill for a quick look. With a rain squall fast approaching and the fact I had taken petroglyph photos last year, I didn't take the time to take any this trip. Luckily the rain held off until we were driving away. |
