| partners | | I've had Ayler's/Palomino Mountain on my list for awhile and when Linda mentioned it when planning what to hike this past Sunday, I jumped all over it. Maybe 2-3 cars at the First Water parking lot when we arrived at 6:30am. Hiked up to Garden Valley with the headlamp, then started down Black Mesa. I had forgotten how never ending the Black Mesa trail is. Felt like it dragged on forever! Made it down to the Dutchman, then headed up the creek for the turnoff. The creek had tons of water which made it a bit more work but it's always nice to see water in the Supes. The route was pretty well defined, but was steep in some spots and definitely made my lungs work hard. Made it to the top and dam the views are incredible, so worth the effort to get up there! Checked out a couple of old mine spots and rested with a quick snack. Headed down and back over to the Dutchman then connected to the Boulder Canyon Trail. Tons of water in the creek especially before the Calvary Junction, however by the time we reached the Second Water junction, it was all gone. There were cairns only on one side of the creek and with the water and tall grass, some good route finding was needed for a bit, however the trail was wide open from Calvary all the way to Second Water and was an easy hike out the rest of the way. Came across very few people today and only a half dozen cars in the parking lot when we got back which is strange for a Sunday, everyone must have been Santa shopping. Awesome hike with great convo, thanks Linda for joining me, looking forward to future adventures! |
