| partners | | First hike of 2023...we almost went to the Superstitions today but decided on two hikes in the Cave Creek area--this one and St. Clair Peak/Indian Butte. We started with the falls first since this one was likely to get busy later in the day. We were the first ones at Blue Wash Trailhead just after sunrise, but a truck with two hikers pulled up right after we arrived. We had a nice sunrise over Four Peaks to the east and the just-past-full moon to the west as we got started...the temperature wasn't bad, but the wind chill made it a little cool.
The hike was pleasant and easy following Blue Wash, and the rock formations along the way were more interesting. As others have mentioned in triplogs, there are plenty of side trails that would be interesting to explore...the route to the falls was marked with arrows in quite a few places, some just drawn into the sand, others made with rocks, and some of the larger side trails also had rock arrows pointing toward them.
The couple that started ahead of us got lost near the Camp Creek/Blue Wash intersection and asked for directions when we caught up. We got to the falls before them, and I was happy to see that there was a decent flow of water...despite the rain last week, I wasn't expecting much given how dry it's been overall. I'm sure the falls get much bigger than what we saw today, but I was still pleased.

We went above the falls and explored a short distance farther up Camp Creek before turning around, and the two hikers were already gone, but another one showed up with two dogs as we got back to the falls. The hike out provided confirmation that it was a good decision to start early for this one--we passed a group of six or seven hiking in, then a few more pairs of hikers closer to the trailhead, and there were six or seven cars in the lot when we got back. I'm sure it was only going to get busier later in the day as the temperature climbed. This was a simple, straightforward hike and a good warmup for the rest of the day, and we headed for St. Clair Peak next. |
