Once I got back to I-8, I decided to see if there was a motel at nearby Pine Valley on old US 80. Bingo! Unfortunately they were not able to take credit cards that night, but I was directed to another motel about 20 miles east at Boulevard. 
This worked out very well, since I was in the area I needed to be for Sunday. Glad I didn't have to head into San Diego or back east into the Imperial Valley for lodging!
