Poppies are pretty, but any blurred camera phone owner can take photos of pretty flowers in the sun. To see them when they're cold, shriveled, and afraid to show their perky side is the real treat.
Horseshoe was letting out 7900cfs. The most I'd ever seen before was 4500. Dam impressive! Chatted with SRP guy who said they just kicked it up 1600 to 9500. Oh cool! Dressed in full raingear, got drenched anyway. Like walking through a carwash in a three-piece suit lol. I love it!
On the drive out, that extra 1600 caught me off guard. On the drive in, it was maybe 50 yards through the river at 2 feet deep and no current. On the return it looked a little longer, but I might've almost SSKd it as the water splashed up on my hood toward the windshield. Whoops!
Took a stroll up one of the side drainages to enjoy the spring desert and water flow. JJsTNT for dinner topped off a fantastic day.
Put this one on the back burner. Thursday morning they opened it more, doubling the flow to 18,400cfs.* The road is flooded at that crossing I almost failed at, so to get to the dam now requires a three mile road hike after a chest-high water crossing. Good luck!
*edit: by Thursday night release flow increased to 25,000. Inflow is over 50,000 so expect this to climb more in the next day or two. Tonto NF instituted an emergency closure restricting all road access beginning at the Bartlett Road turnoff. |
