Even resigned to getting wet, it was very slow going because it was quite deep most everywhere and the current was powerful. I had expected a lot of water in Tortilla Creek, but I was blown away by the rushing rapids coming out of Peter's Canyon and all the waterfalls. Some were 10 to 12 feet high coming off those huge boulders. It sounded like Niagra Falls in there! It was amazing.
Navigation was SO slow all day, I barely made it into Peter's Canyon when I knew I would have to start back or run out of daylight. Plus, I was pretty wet and it was starting to get cold. Bummer.
Worth noting: Both the shortcut over the ridge from Tortilla Flat down to the creek and the bypass to avoid the boulders on the east side of the entrance to Peter's Canyon are still in good shape and not as overgrown as I thought they might be.
Tortilla Flat was just crawling with people that day, but I only saw 5 others in the canyons. |
