| partners | | I read a blog from Jim Hatt (2/15/2010) on DesertUSA where he said he lost a rock hammer in a side canyon of Tortilla Creek about 10 years prior. In 2007 when we hiked to Peters Cave, Dana did a lasso loop and said he found a rock hammer but left it behind. I got to thinking these were the same and decided to see if we could locate it. Denny had never been to Peters Cave so the quest was on. We hiked, hopped, climbed and jumped out to the caves and then continued past the deep pool to the sharp bend in Peters Canyon. We climbed up the side a ways and stopped for snacks and hydration on the way up. I thought I remembered Dana saying the hammer was up at the top but we searched and came up empty. we continued down a tributary canyon toward Tortilla Creek and spotted a rock hammer (of all things ) and a grill on a rock. We continued down the canyon and had to down climb or hike around several waterfalls. We Intersected Tortilla Creek just east of Hell Hole Spring. The story on HHS is that there was a Cavalry/Apache skirmish in the 1800's and there used to be bones in the area. Strangely enough we did see a vertebrae and joint fragment but not sure of the ID. The final hike out Tortilla Creek was fun but this is a good workout for less than 6 miles.
Thanks for driving Denny. |
