You can drive in if you are heading through the park but the road to the lodge is closed. We drove to the junction and parked there (not a lot of spaces available along the road). From the Junction we hiked along the road for 3 miles to the lodge. The road walk was actually very pleasant with lots to see. You actually see more walking than you do in the crowded tram. At the lodge we saw some large water falls and decided to take the Emerald Pools trail to see them. Very impressive falls with a nice trail to the lower middle and upper falls. We headed back via the Grotto and caught a tram to the end of the park road and returned to our starting point via the tram.
The tram system is rather nice if you are hiking the trails in the park, you park in town and tram it to the trail head. I found out many schools were out for a 3 week spring break so the park was full of Californians, about half the cars. I had to keep telling myself that they are people too . On the second day we drove to the east end of the park and it was much less crowded, of coarse it was snowing. Looks like the trails on this end of the park would be more interesting and not as busy. Ginny and I decided we will have to come back to this area and do some of these hikes. We also visited Bryce but it was 12 degrees with 30 inches of snow, no hiking this time. We then headed to Jacob lake there was just as much snow and the road closed at Jacob lake, no hiking there this time either. We headed back via the reservation stopped in sanders to buy yarn for my rugs and headed to Lubbock. You guessed it no hiking there either. |
