| partners | | third day of our joshua tree trip
my only request for the trip was that i wanted to do this hike in the northwest corner of the park
it's a bit of a drive from cottonwood, but we got up there around 0915 or so
parked at the nature center and headed through the campground
the trail follows black rock canyon at an easy uphill grade
lots of flowers, including some very tall fiddleneck
interesting rock formations in the canyon
at about two miles, the trail splits - right to warren peak, left to panorama loop
we wanted to go to the peak first so continued west on good trail
there is a short steeper spur to warren peak
we took a break on the peak to enjoy the views and cell service
angela kindly waited for me at the spur intersection while i went up another peak just to the south
all off trail, and i probably would have just done the little overlook with her had i looked at the track we were following
extra credit
we returned to the trail split and followed the panorama loop
wide smooth trail at a moderate uphill grade
turning around we had great views of snow covered mountains to the west
angela felt this hike would be best done in the opposite direction we did
we ascended to a ridgeline, and i hit 5195 on a very short use trail
some switchbacks dropping of the ridge, then back to black canyon for the finish
great combo and probably the best hike i've done in the park
it was a little breezy but temps were comfortable and we had some cloud cover at times
thanks for humoring me on this one angela 
we rolled into yucca valley for some mexican food afterwards, then enjoyed the drive back to cottonwood
nice sunset that evening as a bonus |
