This hike was to the summit of Lime Kiln Mountain (elevation of 6,464 feet and prominence of 1,544 feet), in NW Arizona. Lime Kiln Mountain is in the Virgin Mountains and is part of the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.

Lime Kiln Mountain got its name from the nearby Lime Kiln Mine. A lime kiln applies heat to limestone to turn it into lime.

I drove in on Lime Kiln Canyon Road, which is a fairly crappy road. I was going to drive about 1/2 mile further than I did, but I got to a place on the road where I wasn't sure if I had enough clearance. Given that I was in the middle of nowhere, I figured that it made sense to employ some conservative decision making, so I decided to park and start the hike from there.

I'd say that 60% of the hike was on a road, with the remainder following a ridgeline to the summit from the SW. Some of the ridgeline seemed to follow an old road bed, and the rest was basically through open country. There were no trees out there, so there nice open views the entire way, and the geology was interesting to look at.

The summit was nice so I stayed up there for a while. I located both reference marks but did not see the benchmark (it was either underneath a rock cairn or some bushes).

I went back the same way that I came up. It was a cloudy, breezy morning which made for some nice summertime hiking. The hike was all class 1 and I enjoyed the hike and the nice views that were there throughout the hike. Not many people do this hike, and if you enjoy nice views and solitude you'll find both on this one.
