| no partners | | This hike was to the summit of Sacajawea Peak (elevation of 9,838 feet and prominence of 6,388 feet), the highpoint of Wallowa County. Wallowa County is in extreme northeast Oregon, and is bordered by Washington to the north and Idaho to the East.
Sacajawea Peak is the highpoint of the Wallowa Mountains, which are known as the "Alps of Oregon". Sacajawea is the 6th highest peak in Oregon, and it is the states highest peak outside of the Cascades.
We started and ended the hike at the Hurricane Creek TH. Most any vehicle can drive there, although there are a few potholes in the road right now so I don't recommend driving like a bat of hell on your way to the TH.
The first two miles or so of the hike are on the Hurricane Creek Trail, which is a nice trail going alongside Hurricane Creek.
Then we crossed Hurricane Creek and took a use trail up to the summit. The first 2 miles or so of the use trail were crazy steep, so that part was not all that enjoyable. Then the trail flattened out for about 1.5 going through a meadow, which was a very nice section of trail.
After leaving the meadow, the trail got steep again -- the route scout split for mile 7 said that we gained 1,650 feet, and I believe it. We eventually made it to the summit though.
Actually, I wasn't 100% sure that we would be able to summit on this day. It started raining about 3.5-4.0 miles into the hike, and we stopped when we were getting above the treeline and decided to take shelter underneath some pine trees in hopes that the rain would stop. After about 45 minutes the rain did stop, so we took off our rain gear and made the steep ascent to the summit.
I enjoyed this hike, even though the rain tried to put a damper on things. The Wallowa Mountains are very scenic, and there are lots of creeks and waterfalls in this area. This is a tough day hike, so a sensible person might choose to backpack and do the hike over a couple of days. There is a meadow about 5 miles from the TH that has lots of flat ground for campsites, and a creek runs through the meadow. |
