With an elevation well over 11,000 feet, if you ask me this peak should be called a "mountain" instead of a "hill". From a distance, Bunker Hill looks quite imposing. Bunker Hill is in the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada, and is south of the town of Austin.
I drove in from Highway 376 through the small town of Kingston. My rental 2WD Rav4 had no trouble getting past the Kingston Guard Station, which is about 8 miles from the highway. However, shortly past the guard station there were a couple of water crossings. The first one was only 2-3 inches deep, and I had no trouble crossing it. However, the second one was somewhat deeper, and would have been ok in a higher clearance vehicle. However, I did not want to take a chance on getting stuck in my rental vehicle, so I turned around and parked at the first pullout that I came to. This added about 2.3 miles of easy road walking each way.
I hiked down Kingston Canyon Road for 2.3 flat miles and then went up Basin Canyon Road for about 3/4 mile. From this point on the hike was off-trail, and was all uphill to the summit. After leaving the road I had to make a really steep climb up to a ridgeline, and then followed the ridgeline for a bit before sidehilling around a subpeak. Then there was a climb to the east up a steep slope that gained about 1,300 feet in a mile. This put me to a saddle below a false summit, which required a steep slippery climb to get to. Then there were 3-4 more false summits to go over before getting to the summit of Bunker Hill. I went back the way that I came.
All of the steep uphill climbing on this hike was a bit of a slog. I thought that it was a challenging hike, but it is not my favorite Great Basin hike. |
