Gold Mountain is remote and isolated, even by Nevada standards. Esmeralda County only had 729 residents in the 2020 census, and you can almost be guaranteed solitude on Gold Mountain.
From Goldpoint, I left pavement and drove about 10 miles on a maze of old mining roads. The roads were in good shape most of the way, but I was glad to have a high clearance 4WD vehicle for the last couple of miles. I parked at a saddle at a confluence of some lesser mining roads.
I hiked about 1/4 mile on the road, and then went off-trail up to the summit, mostly following a ridgeline. I would describe the off-trail hiking as light bushwhacking, but others may think that it more akin to hiking through open-country.
At the summit there is a Lilley-MacLeod register along with the benchmark and 2 reference marks. Views at the summit are amazing and are some of the best that I have seen. Of course, I should have been a bit remorseful for being there instead of at the top hiking states of CT, MA, or NJ. Personally, I'll take Gold Mountain over a state park near Hoboken!
Synopsis
It is a long drive for such a short hike, but I am glad that I did this one. |
