I started from Pima Canyon around 5AM...the mornings are getting noticeably darker as fall approaches, and clouds make it even darker than usual today. Early on, four coyotes crossed the trail in front of me--two adults and two little ones, which was a nice way to start the hike. Just too bad it was too dark to get a decent picture.
The highlight of the morning was the sunrise--there was a 15-minute stretch where the sky was spectacular, and I paused more than a few times to snap some pictures. Once the sun was up, it was a mostly overcast, boring sky, but the lack of direct sunlight made the humidity a less less uncomfortable. Not to much traffic on the trails this morning, just occasional mountain bikers and even fewer hikers out...not unexpected for a weekday morning.
I followed National Trail through Hidden Valley and got back on National after Fat Man's pass, then continued past Buena Vista Lookout onto Holbert Trail for a while before turning around a little before Dobbins Lookout. I saw a road runner or two back near the trailhead, but other than the wildlife and the sunrise, it was a pretty typical South Mountain outing. |
