I started before sunrise with the remnants of the harvest moon lighting the way. It was very hazy, which made for an underwhelming sunrise. All morning, visibility was low--the Superstitions and Four Peaks were completely hidden in the haze, and even downtown Phoenix and Camelback were barely visible.
Nearly all my recent South Mountain hikes have been on weekday mornings, so it felt especially busy with weekend crowds, which are growing as the temperatures finally drop. But it was very comfortable starting in the 60s for a change, and it stayed cool enough that I didn't bother taking any water breaks--just a quick out and back to Dobbins Lookout, which I hadn't visited in almost a year. I ended up with some blisters, which must mean the boots have crossed that line between broken-in and breaking down. No interesting wildlife today, just lots of people on the trails, but I'm pretty sure I had a trekkin_gecko sighting along National Trail on my way back. |
