The off road in isn't too bad until you get close to Steamboat. You'll hit a section with bigger boulders in the way where higher clearance on your vehicle would help. I pulled off and parked at the turnoff at the SW part of the mountain. I hiked in the wash that started there heading up towards the SE part of the mountain. Made my way up a rock wash to the SE face and then traversed the south side and it was virtually a solid ledge to lead you up in a zig zag fashion. I just decided to climb right up the south face as it was not too bad of exposure and the holds were great. The rock is sharp and loose in some parts so make sure you know what you are doing. Got up to the summit in 38 minutes from where I parked. The view at the top was very nice. The early morning clouds were covering half of the valley around the area so I could not make out too much, then the clouds decided to pay me a visit which drenched me in sweat as the humidity level went to 100%. But there are several smaller peaks in this isolated area I would love to explore, so perhaps I will be back one day soon after some research. (If anyone knows the area please feel free to let me know anything about it) Great area to hike and be in isolation. |
