| no partners | | It was Dave, Chris and myself on this hike. Dave drove us to the Red Ridge trailhead. We arrived around 10 am and felt like we had enough time to get to Catalina camp and back. Along the way we planned to hike to 2 numbered peaks (7171 and 6268). I did this trail in Oct 2020 when I did a hike down Oracle ridge and up Red Ridge. Note: all stats will be listed under Peak 7171 for this hike.
The trail was rocky and steep. We took a few water breaks along the way. The trail went to the left side of Peak 7171. When we got close, we found clearings and did an open Country hike to the top which only took about 2 minutes. We stopped for a break at the peak and saw a lot of big rain clouds to the East. Looking West, the skies were pretty clear. We didn't find a registry and didn't leave one even though I did have a jar in my backpack.
We continued down the Red Ridge trailhead. We could see Peak 6268 up ahead. The trail took us right to a saddle Southeast of Peak 6268. On the way up, we encountered some catclaw bush. I stepped on it and over it when needed, but it was possible to go around most of it. We got to the peak in probably 5 or 10 minutes max. On the way down I found an old horse shoe that could have been used for a mule during the mining years.
We continued all the way down to a stream before reaching a trail junction. There was flowing water in the stream and there were a few places to cross it. There were some shade tree in this area. Just past the stream we reached a trail junction. The left junction is still the Red Ridge trail and continues down to Canyon del Oro. The right junction would go to Catalina camp. We turned right and continued through the forest to Catalina camp and to the old cabin. We signed the registry and noticed that the cabin needed some cleaning up. I saw a mouse inside which was to be expected. There were a few chairs and a table made out of a door outside the cabin. We had our lunch and rested for almost 2 hours.
Around 3:40, we decided it was time to leave. We felt like we could get to the top of the ridge by 6:30 or so, but it actually took us an hour longer because of the needed breaks and the steepness of the trail. We got to the trailhead right after dark. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to make it to Texas roadhouse or even Culver's afterwards. If you do this hike, you'll want to make sure you leave yourself enough time. The sunset views and the views down the ridgeline were very nice on the way back.
