This hike was to the summit of Long Mountain, which is in the Hualapai Valley north of Kingman. The peak is at an elevation of 4,351 feet and prominence of 1,116 feet.

Long Mountain got its name in the early 1900's because it looked long when viewed from the valley.

I parked at the end of E. Calle Lucero. The road was wide and well-graded until the last 0.2 miles. I never engaged 4WD on the final stretch, but high clearance was needed. Virtually any vehicle could easily drive to the final rough spot.

From my parking spot I could look up and see the peak, which is less than 1.5 miles away. There is no trail and the hike is all going cross country. I began by hiking across the valley floor for about 3/4 mile, gradually gaining some elevation. I then had to go up a really steep slope to make my to a ridgeline that led to the peak from the northwest. The slope was steep and fairly loose, and the going was slow. Once on the ridgeline the going was better, and there was a bit of class 2 scrambling on the final 0.1 mile. This was the most enjoyable part of the hike I thought. The ridgeline was narrow, but it was not a knife edge.

The summit had some nice 360 degree views, so I hung out there a bit. The benchmark was at the summit and was dated 1938. I also located all 3 reference marks. Once reference mark was numbered as No. 3 and was dated 1947. The other two reference marks were not numbered, and both were dated 1958.

I returned the way that I came. I could see my truck the entire way back down, so there was little chance of getting lost!

Synopsis
This wasn't my favorite hike ever, although it wasn't terrible either. The vegetation and geology wasn't all that interesting, and the climb to the ridgeline was too steep and loose to really be enjoyable. However, hiking on the ridgeline was nice and the views at the summit were great. So I guess that this one was a mixed bag.
