| no partners | | This hike was to the highpoint of the San Luis Mountains, which are in southern Pima County, southwest of the town of Arivaca. The unnamed highpoint is marked on topo maps with an elevation of 4,797 feet and it has prominence of 597 feet. The highpoint is less than 5 miles from the Mexican border.
The San Luis Mountains are one of 192 mountain ranges either wholly or partly in Arizona. Back in the day some Mexicans had a mine in the area that they called the San Luis Mine; the mountains took their name from the mine.
From Arivaca, I drove south onto Tres Bellotas Road. From there, I took FR 611A and FR 4877 to where I parked. I could have driven to the end of FR 4877 which would have shortened the hike by about 0.3 miles each way. It's an easy drive for a high clearance 4WD vehicle, and I think that an SUV with good clearance could probably drive it also.
From the end of the road I followed a decent use/smugglers trail all the way to the summit. The first part was steep, but the grade moderated after that. I saw a couple of black plastic water jugs on the ground, but they were old and brittle. The use trail seemed to get some use, so I am thinking that it could be an active area for indocumentados, but I am not certain of that. In any event, I did not see anyone else.
There were nice expansive views at the summit, so I enjoyed being up there. After hanging around up there for a bit, I returned the way that I came. |
