I actually did two hikes on this day. The second hike was to Peak 5830, in the nearby Cerbat Mountains. However, I got a late start and I saw that I would run out of daylight if I tried to make it to the summit, so I stopped short of the summit. I'll be back though!
Table Mountain Plateau
(3.21 miles with AEG of 668 feet)
I drove in on a dirt road and parked at the end of the road. I was glad to have a high clearance 4WD vehicle for the latter part of the drive.
I parked southeast of the summit, and then looped around and got to the summit from the southwest.
Three things characterized this hike:
1) scenic views along the way
2) lots of basalt
3) numerous joshua trees
The first and third of these were nice, but I could have done without all the basalt that littered the ground throughout much of the hike.
The grades were nice and gentle for most of the hike. There was a Lilley-MacLeod register at the summit that has been there almost 34 years. I located the benchmark and both register marks, all of which were stamped "Yucca Springs". The azimuth mark was about 100 yards away, but I did not have the coordinates for it so I did not look for it. My route may have taken me close to it though.
I hung out at the expansive summit for a while, and there were plenty of basalt rocks to sit on!
I returned the way that I came.
Peak 5830(attempt)
(4.01 miles with AEG of 1,131 feet)
After hiking to the Table Mountain Plateau, I drove over toward Peak 5830 and found a place to park. The last half mile or so definitely required a high clearance 4WD vehicle.
I knew that I was short on time, but I decided to check out the hike anyway. There was some route finding, which slowed me down some. I made it to within 700-800 vertical feet of the summit, and at that point I figured that if I continued I might not make it back before dark. Actually, I think that I could have gotten back to where I parked, but I did not want to drive on the crappy roads out of there in the dark. I found a better route on the way back, so I got back sooner than I expected.
I will go back there the first chance that I get and hike this peak again.
Synopsis
I enjoyed both of these hikes -- the area was pretty and the hikes were interesting. |
