| no partners | | This was a hike to Peak 6193, which I have seen called Mescal Peak, no doubt because of its proximity to Mescal Spring. No matter what you call it, it has an elevation of 6,193 feet and prominence of 1,106 feet.
Peak 6193 is in Cochise County, and is in between the Whetstone Mountains and the Mustang Mountains. I am not certain if it is part of either of those ranges, or if it just between them.
I parked at a pullout on Highway 82 near a locked gate that had a sign on it saying "Private Property - foot access permitted". So I was off to the races!
There is no trail on this hike, but the first couple of miles are easy hiking on a ranch road. Then it is cross country across open desert, followed by a somewhat brushy ascent. Once off the desert floor, I made my way up to a ridge that went to the peak from the southeast. There was a cliff band on my right, so I stayed to the left and curled around a bit to get to the summit in order to keep the climb to class 2.
There were nice open views at the summit of the mountain ranges in the area, with the Huachucas and Santa Ritas standing out.
I went back the way that I came, and it was a little slippery getting off of the summit block.
Synopsis
This was a straightforward hike -- the peak was in view the entire way, and there were no real surprises. It was somewhat steep, but not unusually so compared to other off-trail peak hikes that I have done. The views at the summit were nice, and I enjoyed this hike, notwithstanding all the ocotillo that I had to over, under, around, and through on the upper slopes. |
