| no partners | | I arrived at Tortilla Trailhead parking lot about 8 am and quickly determined I wouldn't be driving my rig in on FR 213. I rode my mountain bike to the trailhead: 3.22 miles, took about 45 minutes. I met a backpacker breaking camp at the windmill who was headed to Horse Camp Basin (this after thinking, "Well, I won't see anybody back here today.") I was able to boulder hop Tortilla creek, so had dry feet as I headed up out of the canyon. The trail through Peters Canyon is quite brushy and I was glad to have long pants although the prickly pear decided to leap out at me frequently which required a few stops to pick spines out of my legs and pants. I could boulder hop the creek crossings here as well. Lots of water in the creeks and springs and there was even running water in the little draw just before you reach the saddle between the two humps of Peters Mesa. I headed east up to 3765 for a leisurely lunch. On the hike back up Peters Canyon, I just boulder-hopped up the creek rather than take the trails on either side. Back at the trailhead, I saddled up the bike and headed up the loooong uphill on FR 213 to the ranch gate, then on down to the parking lot and a cold Shiner Bock.
I was glad to have the bike - it was quicker and not really harder than hiking the road.
Overall, a great hike for a there and back. |
