| no partners | | I left the Tortilla 2WD TH early Monday morning intending to ride my mountain bike to the 4WD TH, but a flat tire ended that dream prematurely, so I stashed it off the road. Arrived at the 4WD TH where the new sign directed me onto the trail which is in excellent shape. When I got to where the trail heads up to the mesa from Peter's Creek, I investigated Upper Peter's Canyon for about .8 miles, but the brush got thick and it appeared the Upper Peter's Canyon Loop would be slow going. So I returned to the trail and hiked up to the mesa. I found a trickle of water and many pools below the unnamed spring up on top. I enjoyed a spectacular sunset, then crawled into my sleeping bag for a cowboy camp night. A brief shower gave me a bit of a scare, but the clouds cleared off for a beautiful night. Upon returning to the Peter's Creek trail crossing, I noted something unusual half floating in a pool. It was the viscera of some unknown small animal. And that's why we filter our water in the Superstitions! Despite the volume of water in the creeks, I was able to complete both the in and out sections of the hike without getting wet feet. I retrieved my bike on the return, then joined the parade of tourists on SR88 returning to AJ.The trail is in excellent shape and I thank those have appear to have recently brushed it. |
