| partners | | I've driven by the sign for this one on FH3 dozens of times over the past 3 decades and never taken the time to visit. As we were camped in the vicinity, we decided to make a sunset-ish visit.
As reported, the road is closed. The peak area has been aggressively thinned with the presumptive goal of protecting the tower. Which is weird since it does not appear to have been used for fire detection in many years.
It is a cool old wooden structure however, unlike the majority of cabs across the state that are erected on metal structures. The footboards have been recently replaced, despite this lack of use, so the structure appears to be in reasonably good condition.
In the past several years, fire towers across the state have been inspected by the FAA and the inspection labels attached to the structure. Oddly, this one has no such inspection reports -- perhaps because it is no longer in use.
Blah blah blah. Nice to cross this one off the list. Reasonable views from the steps below the cab, though had the entry to the catwalk been unlocked, the few extra feet would provide less-obstructed sights above the nearby treetops.
I wouldn't choose the direct route down on purpose. The road is quite enjoyable for a return downhill. |
