| partners | | Took a nice break from the first '24 furnace weekend in valley for a lazy trip up north. With a wake-up temp dropping to a majestic flat 40, it was perfect for spending an extra hour in the sleeping bag before sparking up the campfire again for a hot prehike breakfast. As such, our delayed arrival at the trailhead a couple miles up the road meant that there were already a dozen cars parked there.
Somehow we passed only three pairs of hikers who were on the descent and a handful of others just below the summit. After a nice break enjoying the pleasantly cool breeze and welcome early-June cloudiness we agreed to split up, with Karl heading back down Kendrick while I was going to check out how much pumpkin spice there was.
Somebody has been through with a saw to clear the few new downed trees this spring, and it was in great shape overall. About 1500 feet below the summit, I decided to skip the rest of the pumpkin and eliminate the need for a shuttle. Instead I headed down toward a drainage between pk 8439 and Newman Spring. This offtrail route was surprisingly pleasant and followed some impressively traveled elk tracks and some old 2 tracks before reaching the 190 for a half mile descent back to the trailhead. I really liked this route and would consider it as an ideal ending for a Kendrick-Bull-Pumpkin loop in the future, avoiding a second Kendrick summit. At some point, I would like to see if I can find the old trail that exists not far from my route. I looked for signs of it but saw nothing definitive, guessing that I was probably a little too far south/east from the old track.
There were more cars in the parking lot upon the return, and Karl arrived down the main trail a few minutes after me, reporting that he had passed a few dozen hikers on his descent, including two groups of backpackers -- which made us reminisce about that one haz time that both Joe and Denny actually slept outside on purpose. And because Hikebot spies on your phone just like the googlebooks do, next time I loaded it, this [ photo ] appeared on the homepage. When testifying before congress alongside evil tech giants, hikebot will also claim it to be a coincidence. |
