| partners | | On day 4 before heading back to Tucson Ginny and I stopped off at the San Francisco Hot Springs. I have always wanted to check this place out but it was always out of the way. We started about 10 in the morning and it was already warm but it is a short 1.5 miles to the river with about 400 feet of elevation change. No one at the trail head.
Trail is easy to follow, for the first mile there is a little uphill as you cross over a pass then a gradual downhill until the canyon is in view then about a 300 foot drop. The trail does a few switchbacks so it is fairly easy getting down and back out. Once the river is in view you can see the thick grove of sycamore and cottonwood below. We walked along the south bank for about .5 miles until it required a crossing of the river to go any further (It could be done easily by just walking across in calf deep water (knee deep for Ginny)). I wasn't sure where the hot springs are and since the flooding some years back the pools have been washed away, we never did find them. That was OK with us, who needs a hot spring when the temps are around 90. The River water felt good. Beautiful riparian area. We didn't stay too long so before heading out we soaked our shirts in water and climbed out. every so often a light breeze could be felt and the wet shirts were a blessing. The only people we saw was on our way out 2 people were heading down. Not so sure this is quite the place it use to be. If you time it right big horn sheep can be seen climbing around on the cliffs. |
