The first 1.5 miles of the trail were in good condition and had some maintenance done recently. The next mile to Novio Creek/Spring was really overgrown. The trail was still easy to follow though. Once near Novio Spring the trail has been cleared of brush. At Novio Creek Crossing (had a really light flow) we headed upstream to theF-86 crash site. The engine is starting to show it's age or people are starting to pick at it. Headed on our way to the west end of the butterfly trail along the Catalina Highway. Parts of this trail were maintained and other section overgrown but still easy to follow. This was a hot section of the hike as the east facing slopes are in direct sunlight.
Once at Catalina Highway we took a lunch break then headed along the highway to the Bear Wallow dirt road and headed up to Bigelow. Easy walking along the road to Bigelow. Lots of campers along this section. The weather was overcast with rain to the east over the San Pedro Valley. Really cooled it off for us though.
Along the Butterfly Trail are two trail junctions, one the Crystal Spring Trail that I have been on a few years back but the other is the Davis Spring Trail. Has anyone been on that trail and is it still there. Also curious about the Knagge Creek Trail. |
