| partners | | Ginny and I wanted to do some shopping on the far northwest side of town and I suggested since we are in the area lets take a short hike up Safford Peak (Sombrero Peak). This was a short 4.7 mile hike that I had done about 8 years ago. I had forgotten just how steep this hike was. The little over 1 mile to the peak with about 1500 feet elevation gain was probably the most challenging hike Ginny had been on. If you weren't on a steep trail you were on a rock climb/scramble to get to the top of this pile of rocks. The hike down was probably harder than the climb up, very slow to keep from falling/tripping. Great views from the summit, pretty much all of southern Arizona and north almost to the mountains in Phoenix. On a clearer day I bet you could see the Superstitions east of Phoenix. On the return hike we took a side trail just to try to make this a 5 mile hike. As it turned out it was 4.8 with 1700 feet AEG. The store we wanted to go to didn't have what we wanted so we headed home after stopping at Rudy's for dinner.
Great hike with fantastic views.
