This is an interesting hike because the AEG and the Elevation change are pretty much the same, continuous uphill grind. Start out at 5400 and end at 9400 with maybe a 100 feet total of downhill sections. Only a few people on the trail most were coming down as we were heading up.
The trail is in great condition with what looks like some recent brush clearing. A few Icy spots on the north facing slopes as you travel up to Baldy Saddle but with careful walking on exposed rock they can be traversed. Only fell once on the way down along this section. Even the snow along the trail was frozen. A few icy sections along the trail above Baldy Saddle with one about 20 feet long requiring to get on all fours to maneuver across. Bellow Spring was frozen solid, icicles could be seen hanging from where the water seeps out of the rocks.
We were planning on returning via the super trail down to Josephine Saddle then the old baldy trail back to our start point but as time was running short we just returned the way we came. Taking the upper super trail would of added 1.4 miles to our hike. Not a big fan of the super trail, I call it the super long trail. Adds about 4 miles to the hike and in the end you still have to climb to the summit. Perfect weather for this hike, A little cool in the shade and a little warm in the sun with no breeze. |
