| partners | | This is one of those hikes I have done multiple times and dread doing it. Usually coming down from Mica Mountain through Cow Head Saddle then over Tanque Verde Peak and down the ridge. Those 8 downs and ups coming down the ridge can really irritate you especially when you're tired. But in spite of all that I continue doing it. It's kind of like beating your head with a hammer , it feels so good when you stop. We hiked up to Juniper Basin which was posted as 6.9 miles and I recorded 7.03. enjoyed the scenery and views from along the ridge. Box Canyon to the south of the trail looks inviting and I keep saying some day I will explore it. Probably not passable without doing some intense rock scrambling and maybe skirting the creek in places. I have explored the lower portion of the canyon years ago but the park service says it is off limits because there are no trails there (no cross country allowed below 4500 feet). Probably because of the Hohokam ruins in that lower canyon.
Great views especially after the exiting storm. Didn't drop much rain here, only water we saw was two tiny pools ( less than 2 inches across) that collected in rock pockets. Dry everywhere else. No one on the trail except along the first mile or two of trail. Saw two white tail deer on our return trip. A few of the old metal trail markers that were quite common in the 60's to mark trails in the Rincons are still present in the Juniper Basin area nailed to old dead Junipers. No longer bright orange though.
Took a 30 minute break at Juniper basin then headed back. Back down the ridge with those 8 dreaded downs then ups, over 500 feet of AEG on those suckers. |
