| no partners | | I normally hide these frequent hikes/walks by my house, but today’s walk had enough pics for an actual photoset. The walk is a ridge that runs N-S near Desert Foothills, and has some decent trails and old roads from the old proving grounds. It’s enough for some exercise, and wildlife, usually coyotes, is nearly guaranteed. For a slightly rougher hike, there’s a rocky ridge at the south end that loops around the east side of an old quarry before rejoining the main trail.
This morning, as we were heading south, I veered onto the rocky ridge. Something caught Harlow’s attention and when I looked the direction she was focused on, saw what I first assumed was a coyote. After a second glance I realized it was actually a bobcat walking below us. Took some pics and followed it back north and off the ridge, where it headed into the neighborhood.
At that point, I didn’t want to reclimb the rocks, so we stayed on the main trail as we headed back south. Once down by the quarry, I spotted a dog running loose. Of course that caught Harlow’s attention too. It was a golden retriever happily chasing a coyote, while it was being chased by another coyote. Plus, I could see two more coyotes joining the chase, while this golden was having the time of his life. Great. I started walking over there in hopes I could scare the coyotes off and grab the dog. I could tell the dog was wearing a collar, and I carry enough paracord to make a leash. As I was walking over there, a man and another golden retriever came over the dirt road, and he was yelling for his loose dog. I pointed to where his dog was, and we got to them around the same time. There were actually six coyotes, and one sat and howled at us while we picked cholla out of his dog.
Five of the coyotes had scattered, but the one was still howling at us, on the rocky ridge I needed to complete my loop. I assured the guy I would be fine on the ridge, while he took his two dogs back to the neighborhood. The coyote did follow me and Harlow up the lower half of the ridge, but stopped when we reached the rocky section. We stayed on the use trail on the east side of the rocks, rather than scrambling over them. Either way works. The rest of the hike was uneventful. |
