Bruce hung back and listened to my whining. Easy hike to glyphs, where we met Jethro and his brothers/cousins/uncles/all of the above at the same time. They were headed to a vague “this peak or that peak” and it all seemed like a bad idea. After not giving them any helpful information, we then headed up the route to Balanced Rock. For the most part, the route is distinct, but having a downloaded track was helpful in a few places. I was grateful for shade.
Took a few breaks on our journey up the never ending uphill. Maybelline Eagle discovered the joys of tinted sunblock—it made him look at least a decade younger. There’s one spot to climb, maybe about 10-12’ that is probably the toughest spot of the route, but if I can make it, most anybody can make it.
Took a nice snack break at the summit of 5057 and enjoyed the hazy views. Could see the fire damage off the east side of the peak. Ran into a group of about a dozen young women after we left the summit and were approaching the ridgeline. One girl liked my hat, Bruce was jealous to not be able to use the full functionality of the cutout for buns or ponytails.
Headed north/west on the ridgeline. It has definitely seen some fire damage and has some loose and eroded spots. Descending was slippery, although I don’t think ascending would be that bad. Saw one spot of frosty ground.
Coming down Hiero wasn’t too bad, steep with loose rock, but nothing terrible. It seems longer than it is, but maybe that’s just the company. It was a bit of a zoo for the final easy part to finish up. We did our best to get around everyone as quickly as possible, although a few ladies took a liking to Bruce.
Fun hike, and a good workout. Great conversation and company for the day. |
