| no partners | | After the two too-short 'hikes' yesterday, I really wanted to bike but it was cooler and much windier than ideal, so I decided just to do another wandering hike near where we cut the downed Saguaro yesterday, as I had noted a number of munched Saguaros which seemed to have become a thing lately.
Since I seem to come across more items of interest when I have absolutely no planned route, my plan was to try to avoid pretty much any area of familiarity, which can be a challenge since I've been hiking in the vicinity for two decades.
As I wandered, since it was so windy I started scanning for any Saguaro which could be a blow-down candidate in the near future... or even see it fall? At the same time I sought Saguaros and/or Barrels which may have been a target of the munchies. And so pretty much all the hike was photos of them.
Oh wait!... how could I forget about my first rattlesnake encounter of 2025?
Actually, it shouldn't have been so forgettable as it was quite a surprise... between very breezy cool weather and overcast skies it was the last thing I expected. But again, since I have more random encounters off-trail than on, it can't be totally unexpected.

Although the plan was only to cover ground 'new-to-me' I ended up following part of an old equestrian trail for a few hundred yards to get a feel for the wind along a ridge before heading back to the car. Not a long hike, but enough to fill the soles of my boots with thorns and luckily none went all the way through... a few almost did! |
