| no partners | | This was hike 3 on the day in the Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia, trying to take in as much of this beautiful country as time would permit.
As with other hikes in the Blues, the trail began at the rim of a canyon an offered expansive views into the rain forest below. In this area, however, the valley below also included cleared land (farming?) that provided some additional visual diversity.
Eventually, we dropped below the canopy and down a side drainage with running creeks and narrow slots.
For time's sake, we took a "shortcut" of the loop that travels along the base of a sheer cliff (think Grand Canyon Redwall), which is popular with the rock climbing crowd. We saw a handful of climbers out enjoying the late afternoon climb, as the drooping sun lighted up the cliffside walls.
On the opposite side of the traverse, we turned up another drainage and took a short side trip to secluded waterfall that required a little chest-high wading to access.
While there, a few of the climbers who, by the smell of things, hadn't showered in a few days, joined us at the falls and didn't hesitate to go full skinny dipping mode, despite the mixed company. 
After the falls and peep show, we continued our climb out. With the short days, we reached the TH after dark and were glad to have brought our headlamps.
Fish & Chips and a "thick shake" (Down Under, a regular "shake" is basically chocolate milk) at a hole-in-the wall restaurant in nearby Blackheath hit the spot and made a good ending to a solid day of hiking and our time in the Blues. Off to Sydney next .... |
