Road 1 had some torn up tred in the wash but doable in the Jeep, then it climbed out and had some good views but not an attractive area; pretty much desert scrub. However it goes near some areas I wish to explore and it gets me pretty close to an awesome backpack area that I believe is inaccessible by normal means now. Stopped when it crossed a large wash, pretty much intact but was a mud berm and with a 30 foot drop into a bouldery wash I decided to wait until things dried out.
Road 2 I have been on and had some hiking potential. Rock slide so a 6-8 point turn around.
Road 3 is an old favorite of mine, super rough and rocky but has a lot of explore potential too. I car camped early off it and then hiked up a closed off and sort of disguised road cut. This road 3 I think has been sort of discovered. It is what I call a back way into Devils Canyon. If you can get to the correct place in a saddle an old trail takes off and drops you into the canyon not too far from the pools. It's a definite HC 4wd and good tires.
I went over the top of the end of the blocked spur road at a saddle and then off trailed it down thru boulders and vegetation and into the wash which had run but only had a few small pools. An area of large trees ahead intrigued me. I ended up at a full and scenic ranch tank then to an area which has homestead vibes but nothing found but some mining claims. I took an old trail to a hidden ranch house that was in an idyllic setting. Definitely new, although no one seemed home. I did not approach. On the way back a slightly different way that was a lot better than my route in.
On the way home a brushy approach to the San Pedro. It was flooding and I almost slipped and fell several times in the muddy troughs flowing near the main. On a side route found an area with lots of pot shards and some possible ruin outlines.
Busy weekend, not as fulfilling as I would like but it gives me some good ideas. |
