| no partners | | A fixed idea ended up being a meander but that's not a bad thing. I took me 3 hours to drive from Muleshoe to Jackson Cabin. The road into Muleshoe was torn up from the rains but doable and I passed a few road graders on my way in so on my way out a much more tame road. I had to move some rocks, and other debris, do a little road building then I was at the cabin. The goal was to explore some side canyons I had not looked at yet. I took extra water but was counting on finding a few pools here and there since I was not likely to be at any reliable spring source. The canyon had run, but as with so much of this storm system, it had not left much behind in the main.
Very green, and lots of catclaw. I only stayed two nights because of the water situation. Got some good wandering done, but not enough. It was good to be back in the wilderness but it's notable that the southern end is not getting any love as far as trail or road maintenance. I came out without water but did find a little on top of a boulder and drank some of that so was good to go.
I decided to car camp at a spot off the 4wd road after I had finished some bad spot driving. I will still say this is probably the most scenic 4wd road in southern arizona. You will need HC, 4wd, good tires and in spots a rear locker and an experienced driver.
I hiked up in the foothills at the base of the cliffs; the next down a small canyon with flowing water that soon dropped and was a bit of work to get down. I didn't see another person or vehicle except some hunters in an ATV that seemed amazed the Toyota made it up the hill at the Redfield canyon wilderness sign.
I will go back to poke around some spots off the road that have some interest. |
