| no partners | | Promising skies and some strong rain bands but the flood did not materialize; at least where I was. I have always wanted to car camp on a flat rock bench near a cliff edge and did so. The views were great and the clouds were crazy, including one that had a cyclonic rotation followed by some walloping rain.
I walked about and took some shots, heard the run off in the canyon below but could not see it as getting off the mesa was a bit complicated. I stayed high for a while, then crawled into the back of the Jeep for the night.
Next day gray skies and some sun here and there. I set out to get into a far upcanyon area I had not been. Getting off the mesa was a pain and then it was much easier hiking in the grassy foothills. Cool rocks. I finally went around the nose of a rock prominence and down the forming canyon. It was rough. Found another illegal migrant lay up with plenty of graffiti on the rock face. I had some camera problems so not sure how some of the photos will turn out. Boulder crawling with some deep holes I needed to avoid falling into. Awesome views and the rain held off but the humidity didn't. The little washes all had some water, but not running as overnight there was not much follow up rain. I decided to go out along a ledge, then up and over a brushy and bouldery saddle. I was getting tired but kept at it. Think of the calories you are burning with all the scrambling.
The Jeep was in view in the distance. I did a couple of traverses then was on a rocky bench that seemed familiar as it arced around and I climbed easily to the bench the Jeep was on.
Driving out the rain arrived but the dirt road was in good shape and no issues. Overall I think a very beneficial rain for the land, which it needs badly. |
