| no partners | | I’ve had this one on my list since early this summer. I knew for sure I’d hike to Goat Mtn, and had saved tracks for Reno Mtn & Line Point, just in case.
Good roads to the trailhead, got there around 0730. Temps in the 30s. No breeze. No clouds, but I was on the west side of the mountain, so it was full shade.
First 3/4ths of a mile were easy. Then it got steep. Three miles in a row each gained about 900’. Great trail though—mostly smooth, with few rocks or roots. Maybe three downed trees to step over.
Frozen ground once above 6100’. Views started to open up around 6200’ as I wrapped around the south side of the mountain. The spur trail to the summit of Goat Mtn is about a quarter-mile, with great views. Had a snack at the summit, then decided to at least do Reno Mountain too.
Once back on Trail 44, it was obvious most people do not hike beyond the turnoff to Goat. Fainter trail, but still easy to follow. It stayed mostly around 6400’ until just before the turnoff to Reno.
It is very easy off-trail up the south ridge of Reno. No guesswork involved—just stay on the wide ridge and head north and up. Great views from that summit too.
Once back to the main trail, I decided I might as well hit Line Point. Trail 44 becomes very faint in places. It drops about 200’ to a saddle, then regains the 200’ up to Line Point. The descent had almost no trail, I just followed the well placed cairns. After the saddle, the trail was more noticeable as it climbed up to Line Point, which obviously sits directly on the Idaho/Montana state line.
From there, I retraced my steps on Trail 44 back to the trailhead. Temps in the 50s when I finished. Saw no other people. Animal tracks and a variety of scat—deer, bear, feline (bobcat?), and either mountain goat or bighorn—but no animals today.
Great hike, and now I want to figure out a way to hike the full length of Trail 44. Probably a shuttle. |
