The uphill has some occasional loose rock, but is mostly pretty good. At the saddle, we first headed over to the aptly named Chalcedony Cave. More an alcove than a cave, but it’s okay. We picked through some of the prettier pieces of chalcedony just below the cave.
Returned to the saddle, the headed up to Black Cross Butte. Wandered over to the medicine wheel, then meandered along the north and east edges for some better views. From there, we headed south to the highpoint. Took a quick break, then descended off the south side of the highpoint, making our way downhill and southeast, following a good use trail.
After that, I had some memory of the scrambling part of the descent, at least remembering a few crucial spots. It does look like a use trail bypasses some of the scramble—may check that out next time. We cut off some zigzagging and went down some scree to the next spot of scrambling I remembered. Climbed down that, then it was smooth sailing to finish out the loop. I was glad I had my old track though.
Once back down, we headed over to Crucifix Canyon to pad our miles for the day. Our turn around point was just past the arch. The arch was so-so, but we enjoyed the canyon. Plenty of water, which was nice. Retraced our steps back out. Getting warm by the finish, but it wasn’t too bad. Fun day of exploration, with all new territory for Kelly, and some new territory for me. |
