| no partners | | Started from the Fernan Lake Rd TH into the Canfield system. It's about 10 more minutes of driving vs the Nettleton Gulch TH I usually use. The parking area is large, and directly across the street from the Fernan Rod & Gun Club. Temps were in the upper 30s. One other vehicle in the parking lot, but it looked like he was leaving.
Headed north on Trail 10. After about a quarter-mile, Trail 10 turned west, but we continued north on an unofficial trail that paralleled Dry Gulch, which was not dry. Despite being an unofficial trail, it was in great shape and obviously sees frequent use. We took that trail a little over a mile until it reached Trail A.
Generally speaking, in the Canfield system, trails designated with a letter traverse east-west across the mountain. They are often old roads, and are rarely steep. Trails designated with a number run north-south up and down the mountain. They are often steep and eroded. Very few trails or junctions are well marked, and there are also tons of unofficial trails created by dirt bikers. A map is very helpful.
We took Trail A east, and as expected, it was in great shape. Easy hiking. After a short distance, we turned left onto another sort of official trail. Couldn't find the name of it, but it was on the map. This trail kind of sucked as we made our way back west. The tread was good, but there were tons of low hanging branches to dodge. Nothing bothered the dog, but after about the hundredth duck or dodge, I was ready for this trail to be done. I could hear someone at the range below shooting a full-auto.
Finally, we reached Trail 11, which was in good shape as we headed south. Surprisingly, had cell svc along this trail, along with some nice views. Before too long, Trail 11 reached Trail B, which we took west and south. Also in great shape.
The last trail of the day was Trail 10 again. Finally at a marked junction. Trail 10 headed south, steeply downhill. Lots of erosion made for some tedious footing. Near the bottom, it turned east and mostly leveled off, making for better conditions as we closed the loop.
Nice workout hike close to town. Didn't see any other hikers. Empty parking lot when we finished. Warmed up to about 50 degrees. |
