I headed south to the Old Horse Trail and took a detour on some unnamed trails, then hiked a few miles east and headed north once I was past Turk's Head. on the way on the Old Horse Trail, I saw several marks of snake crossings on the dirt, but couldn't find a snake.
One the way up to the Lost Goldmine Trail, I saw a diamondback on the trail chilling out, but it coiled once I stepped away from it after I spotted it. I gave it a wide berth and took some pics. Looks like it might have just eaten.
The Lost Goldmine Trail is very rocky, especially compared to the rest of the bike trails nearby. It almost seems like the Forest Service deliberately built a trail in the hardest area to build a trail for a decent hike. After Turk's head I took the road to the south and then to the west and headed back part of the way I came out.
On the way back there was a helicopter that was hovering over the ridge just east of where the petroglyphs are. It may have been south of the petroglyphs, it was hard to tell. At first I thought it might have been in the canyon north of there. I couldn't tell if it was a rescue or training, but they did lower someone to the ground on a tether.
Weather was warm, but never hot. Rain clouds passing by early gave some shade but no rain. |
