After having found this place several years ago from a pic in AZ Highways (prior to directions being posted on the Web), I have wanted to return and hike through the canyon to the Black River and up a fisherman's route. I did what I set out to do, but the main falls is by far the most spectacular feature in the canyon and is extremely easy to reach after the long drive - about 6 hours from Phx. Hiking down canyon is very choked with vegetation until passing the tributary with the first side drainage on the left. I would recommend an out-and-back down to the second falls, which is only a couple hundred yards (very slow going) downstream once in the canyon.
