We needed to get to higher ground to get out of the heat, and Woods Canyon Lake is one of Deb's favorites in the state. So, we decided to go.

It was 78 degrees with a breezy to windy start, so we decided against the kayaks. A loop around the lake it was. We had the trail all to ourselves for the entire loop. There were some people fishing on the shore and in boats, but that was it. The weather was glorious.

After lunch at one of the rim vistas with views of the Billy fire in the Anchas, we headed down the paved FR300 to Bear Canyon Lake. You only have the three miles from FR300 to the lake remaining that is now dirt.

We just sampled the trail from the Merganser Trailhead to the lake. Deb had never been to Bear Canyon Lake. There was no one on the lake, and we only saw a single person fishing. The temperatures were still very comfortable in the low 80s.

Two separate bear encounters on the canyon descent to the lake from the rim road. Neither one ran or seemed to care I was there. Also like yesterday, a big group of turkeys were in one of the meadows. A more peaceful lake than Woods Canyon, but as usual, lots of trash along the shorelines.

I have hiked the See Canyon trail often over the years, but I never went the extra few miles to Bear Canyon Lake. Until today. I used a track from @hikerdw for the majority of the hike above See Canyon.

The See Canyon trail is not as tidy as I've seen it. Lots of dead fall, but there are several fresh cuts that resulted in fewer trees I had to climb over. No matter. This is a great trail. A few downed trees gives it character.

Once I reached Rim Road, I took a short break before heading east off trail towards an unnamed forest road running north on Bear Willow Ridge. I decided to skip the east side lake trail due to less than favorable reviews, so I used the forest road to get me to the dam on the north end of the lake. It was a nice stroll through a thick forest of pines. Several nice dispersed campsites. Winged grasshoppers were everywhere along the road, jumping all about as I walked by. It was entertaining for awhile. I dubbed the unnamed forest road Grasshopper Way.

I left the road near the dam, cutting through the last dispersed campsite I saw. As hoped, there was a well used path that dropped down to the lake, bringing me within about 100 yards from the dam. An angler stood on some rocks giving it his best. Farther down by the dam a family and their dog played in the water. I passed by and headed across the dam.

Once past the dam it was smooth sailing along the west side trail. The trail is in good shape. I could have filled a garbage bag with the trash on this side, but I didn't have one. Lots of families out fishing and having a good time. I stopped for a nice lunch at the southwest corner of the lake before heading down Bear Canyon.

Bear Canyon was fun to a point. Where the canyon widened, it was good times with well defined use trails. Where the canyon narrowed, not so much fun. Near the end, it was narrow and choked with down fall. I saw a game/use trail heading up on my right. I took it and followed the path of least resistance back towards the top of See Canyon.

As I was heading down See Canyon, near the top, I passed a guy sitting alongside the trail with a notebook and reference materials jotting down notes about a very large Ponderosa Pine a few feet away. He believes the tree may be a new record setter of some type. 8) The rest of the trip down See Canyon was quite enjoyable. The angle of the afternoon sun changed the colors quite a bit from earlier in the day.

Other than the aforementioned tree enthusiast, I saw a few anglers on the lake and a few hikers close to the See trailhead. The weather was perfect. Low 70's up top, maybe low 80's when I finished. Nice breeze through most of the hike with occasional gusts that would send your hat sailing.

Great day!

Decided to salvage something from the weekend and at least slept outside in some cooler weather. Ran into Ryan and decided to do a quick loop of the lake Sunday morning. The east side is undeveloped but the route is fine. Found some entitled folks who think the forest belongs to them who had driven to the edge of the lake. On my way out I chatted with a FS LEO to about it and she told me a byproduct of the thinning projects is that people just drive whatever they want, wherever they want, whenever they want. #peoplesuck

Revisited this loop from a couple years ago for the annual rim lakes hike before 300 opens. There was still a lot of snow all over the rim, and I'd guess it'll be a couple weekends before it's open. I do think it's open as far as to get to Woods Lake. Two Sixty start with Highline to See Canyon.

The water in Christopher Creek is running off strong. To cross near the TH someone cut down a tree spanning the creek. Heading up See Canyon the only wet crossing was at the See Spring drainage, but it wasn't bad. See Canyon Trail is in the most deteriorated condition I've seen it in five years of going. There is significant deadfall, and the trail is eroded in spots. There was tons of water except in the middle. Still good snow higher up around and above the big waterfall.

Took Bear Canyon down. Deep, hard snow mostly the whole way, but I wasn't really sinking in or sliding on top. Great flow of water. Saw a dozen turkeys on top by 300 and a coyote at the edge of the lake. Hung out around there before climbing out of the SE drainage. I didn't head up very far and instead climbed up where there was no snow. Got on the roads and walked back to 300. There's still big snow drifts on 84 and presumably the road to Bear Canyon Lake.

Carr to Carr Lake, broke in the company of the many harmonizing frogs. Straight from the lake down the easy terrain to Aspen, then to Boulder Hop. The west side of Boulder Hop is a road turned creek bed then a disappearing line in the grass. Pretty easy to navigate the Hole in Ground area without it. Gen Crook through the hole then I climbed back up to 300 to avoid the big pool that feeds upper Woods Canyon.

Trickling and a little snow in the upper canyon, great flow below the dam. The lake is at something like 101%. All the feeder drainages are pouring in. Pretty much had the place to myself, apart from some distant silhouettes. The spillway is running off like a waterfall, so I headed down. Didn't get far in Woods Canyon before bailing due to snow on the slopes I wanted to climb out on farther down. Cut corners back to Meadow then Vista before Sinkhole. Saw a couple cars on Meadow and two men on RV.

Did a late afternoon hike around the lake. We came in via FR208 at the south end and hiked CCW. The trail was there on the east side but was up and down the bank. We saw a couple of fishermen but otherwise had the place to ourselves.

Drove from camp over to Bear Canyon Lake, excited to go kayaking. Discovered that there was not a boat ramp, and didn’t feel like carrying my kayak a quarter mile down to the lake via hiking trail. Should’ve done my research. I remembered a road on the other side of the lake, and drove over there to discover that road gated a quarter mile uphill from the lake, same situation. But I really wanted to kayak and not give up. I found a discarded metal sign full of bullet holes near the gate, ratchet strapped it to the stern of the kayak, hooking the straps’ hooks into the bullet holes, and MacGuyvered myself an ugly kayak-sled. It worked, so I noisily dragged the kayak down the rocky road to the lakeshore. Spent the next couple of hours cruising the beautiful waters by kayak. Saw an osprey, blue heron, and ducks. Wallowed in the chilly lake waters like a sea monster for a bit. Spotted a rope swing among the trees and partook of a couple swings and plunges. Not fun dragging the kayak back uphill on my crappy sled, but it was worth the fun on the lake. Ended up hiking down below the dam for a bit afterward (mileage and aeg included here).

Mostly off-trail canyon-hopping from my campsite off of the Rim Road over to Bear Canyon Lake. Lake appeared to be full. A number of folks out, but not crazy on Monday. Hiked the loop trail around the lake, then back the same way, past Bennet Butler ranch (?) and through the woods. Admired many a corkbark fir along the hike. So nice. Rendezvoused with my friends back at camp in time for dinner.

With early winter being a full-sized dud so far, I decided to take advantage of the first significant snowfall on the rim (even though it was less significant than forecast, which is typical for the first storm after a long dry spell). The forest service closes roads on the rim in winter, so if you're able to catch them before they close, or if it snows in late spring after they've opened, you get to access a little bit of terrain that is more challenging to get to on foot when they're all closed.

So, taking advantage of the still open roads, I had an absolute blast making taco tracks out to Bear Canyon Lake where the new snowfall reached a fun driving depth of only about 6 inches, which also eliminated the need for any flotation on foot.

Clouds lingered, there was an occasional gusty wind, and the temperatures stayed cold enough to keep the snow clinging to the trees and no afternoon melt kept the rain jacket in the pack.

An all around great day loitering across the plateau.

This is on my list of favorite fall hikes.

I was surprised there were only 2 cars in the lot when I arrived.
Overnight overcast skies kept the start to a pleasant 41°. Skys stayed mostly cloudy for the majority of the day, so most of the too many photos I took, were muted.

A quick spin up the See Spring Trail. Colors were vibrant, but will be prime probably next weekend.

I passed one group of 8 on my way up See Canyon. Those were the only hikers I saw all day.
The upper 1/3 of this canyon is still a steep one. At one point I stopped to take some photos and heard some elk crashing up the hill. Only moments later to realize it was the sound of my heart beating.

All of See Canyon has great color. The upper 1/3 is prime right now.

Up on the rim, in Bear Canyon, I heard my first elk bugle of the season. He was within 50 yards, but I could not see him. There was water flowing the entire length of the canyon running into Bear Canyon lake.

Now at the lake, there were a smattering of fishermen trying their luck. at this point, the winds were blowing strongly and it was on the cool side if stopped. The trail on west side of lake is in great shape and easy to follow, especially the southern portion.

Next I was off to Beaver canyon for my return up a side canyon west of Rattlesnake Ridge. I was hoping to find some color here, bud did not come across any until the upper 1/4 mile.

Headed back down See Canyon I got to enjoy the colors all over again.

The only people I saw were a couple people fishing close to the TH. The parking lot was almost empty at 5pm.

See Spring Trail should be prime next weekend.
The upper 2/3rds of See Canyon Trail is prime now. It should last through next weekend.
The are some late holdouts up on top of the rim, but most is on the ground.

Real nice, easy hike around the lake with the pooch. I had never ventured to the southern part of the lake before. Was surprised to see a nice flat area with some benches and picnic area. The trail on the west side of the lake is more rugged than the east side.

Arrived to an empty TH but it was full when we returned. It’s been close to six years since we last hiked See Canyon which is too long, great trail, seemed easier than I remembered. Made the road walk to the south TH of Bear Canyon Lake. Lots of campers along the road and lots of folks fishing at that end of the lake. Planned on hiking the entire length of the Bear Canyon Lake Trail but the east side wasn’t that fun so we headed up to walk a FR to the north side and then followed the trail on the west side which was in really nice condition. Hiked Bear Canyon back to the Rim Road and then back down See Canyon. Bear Canyon was really nice and easy to navigate following game trails. Wildlife sightings included a snake, lots of squirrels, and a eagle. Really nice day.

Before heading down FR 208, I first checked out the trailheads on FR 89A. All three pit toilets were locked for "Covid 19". Good thing I didn't need to use it.

Starting at 8:45, I told my wife I’d be back about 11:30. I planned to also explore the two drainages which feed the lake: Up Bear Canyon to its southwest, then down the unnamed wash to its southeast.

The trail descends a steep & fairly rocky 180 ft. in a ¼ mile to a open area on the south shore of Bear Canyon Lake. I hiked counter-clockwise, to take photographic advantage of the morning sun. There was water in the southeast drainage, but I crossed it dry. Turning north, I edged past a couple guys fishing for rainbow trout. 🎣

The unnumbered trail on the east side of Bear Canyon Lake does get indistinct at times, but generally speaking is within 30 ft. horizontal and 10 ft. vertical of the lake surface. Sometimes the trail is right next to the lake, literally within inches. It’s not a scramble, but I took care negotiating rocky outcroppings to avoid a wet tumble.

The Mogollon Rim got snow just a week ago, so I was not expecting a good flower hunt. I was happy I found what I did. Spotted along the middle third of both banks of Bear Canyon Lake, Arizona valerian was the only flower I noticed in more than one place. I found about nine species, all told. Lichen were common though.

While I was hiking up the east side of Bear Canyon Lake, I saw an Arizona DPS rescue helicopter, no more than 500 ft. up. He did a lap and a half around the lake, then disappeared. My wife said later she worried he was looking for me! 🚁

I got to the dam at the north end of Bear Canyon Lake at 10:30. Hiking the east side took longer than I expected. I knew I wouldn’t have time to explore the drainages and be back to FR 208 by 11:30. (My wife had an early flight on Friday, and I wanted to be considerate, as she makes so many of my hikes possible.)

Halfway south on Bear Canyon Lake Trail #112, there was some kind of rope & stick contraption tied to a tree. It looked like a booby trap, but I’m sure it was a rope swing. Despite being more distinct, there were still a few places where you could lose Trail #112. If you stay within 50 ft. horizontal and 30 ft. vertical of Black Canyon Lake, and look for the next blue diamond, you’ll be okay.

When I arrived back at the south end of the lake, it was already after noon. It was unseasonably warm for the Mogollon Rim — 81° on Rim Road an hour later — so imagine my surprise at finding snow along the bank of the creek. Schweet! 🤗

-----

My wife & I stopped at Fatso’s Pizza on way home, to pickup dinner and knock off the sweat with an ice cold Pabst. Fatso’s is a casual neighborhood place, not a dive bar. While waiting, the weirdo next to me was talking to himself. Not just one muttered curse at a strikeout on the TV, but a whole conversation. I swear, if Milton had mumbled about his red Swingline stapler I would have lost it!

I have not been up on the Rim in over 6 months, so I decided to head up there today and hike up to Bear Canyon Lake from the See Canyon TH.

It was a great day to be up on the Rim -- temperatures were nice and there were some clouds in the sky so we weren't in full sun very much.

The See Canyon Trail was in good shape except for around a half dozen downed trees that we had to navigate around. Once on the Rim, we crossed the Rim Road and went offtrail to FR208, which we took to the lake. There were several people camping along FR208, and there were a few people at the lake, but it wasn't terribly crowded. There were a few patches of snow in some shady spots around the lake, but the snow probably won't last too much longer.

We hung out at the lake for a while and then reversed course back to the TH. On the way back we went up to See Spring.

The water level was fairly low in Christopher Creek, so it was no problem keeping your feet dry on the 2 creek crossings.

This was a nice hike to do on a warm spring day.

It's a fun challenge in April timing a rim lakes hike between the melting of the snow and the opening of FR300. Went as work permitted, and ended up going on the day 300 opened. Had The Rim to myself for most of the day. Wanted to loop Bear Canyon Lake and Woods Canyon Lake together and came up with this. Started at the Two Sixty TH around 8am and went clockwise.

Would have started at See Canyon, but I always save Highline for the end and wanted to give it a fair shake for it's best and most piney stretch. Mountain bike highway between the trailheads that winds between a brilliant forest of pine, fir, maple, and others.

See Canyon Trail had a little deadfall but wasn't as bad as last year. Water from Nappa Spring down and in the upper ~mile. some snow left in the canyon higher up but none on the trail. Decided to skip See Spring since it's familiar and there was so much else to see.

Topped out at FR300 and worked my way down Bear Canyon. Still a good amount of snow but nothing bad. Good flow of water. Just love it in that canyon, dense forest of huge conifers with interspersed meadows. Always a fun feeling seeing the lake at the bottom where the canyon opens up. Lake is full as I've seen it. Had it to myself and was going to walk round but decided to savor the south shore solitude instead. Left via the southeast drainage, which had less snow but a strong flow of water. Didn't hang around the bottom and worked up to the road SE and then up to FR84. Nobody on the road as I walked it.

Got down to Carr Loop which is not so much a trail but a road. Nice walk through the pines. Stopped at Carr Lake which was a nice stop, though won't draw crowds. Aspen Trail is similar but better somehow. Denser forest, the road is older or less maintained, so it feels less like walking on 300. Quite liked Aspen Trail but wasn't on it long before cutting over on Boulder Hop Trail to Gen Crook and the Hole-in-Ground area. Really beautiful area and probably my favorite part of the day. Beautiful weather for a break in the meadow and then off to Woods Canyon.

Woods Canyon is wider and easier than getting down Bear Canyon. Less snow, and there's a use trail the whole way down. Really scenic stretch of canyon from the road to the west of the lake. Planning on coming back and exploring east of the lake where there's a lot more to see. The trail around Woods Canyon Lake is in great shape with chevrons every so often. Really nice walk a couple hours before sunset. People were filing into the lake area, and I realized the road was opened. Rest of the trip was busy with car traffic.

Was going to continue through Woods past the dam and head to Sinkhole that way, but my feet were killing me. It's no shorter to use Meadow and Rim Vista, but those are less trails and more sidewalks, and I figured my feet would thank me. It's a really pretty section of open pine forest, but it was busy with car traffic.

Sinkhole was a nice way to end. Made for bikers, the tread is smooth and it's all downhill. It descends through the shade of pine trees. Got back down to the trailhead only having seen people in cars on the rimtop.

The first flash of winter across the Arizona high country ended up being a little bit disappointing as far as what happened based on what was forecast, but alas, I made a great day of it anyway. There's nothing quite like the peaceful serenity of fresh falling snow. The warm fall thusfar made it so that lake hadn't even begun to freeze over yet, but the circumference trail was more than adequate for a few miles of winter escape. It's my first November snowshoe in Arizona, and while I don't have high expectations for this winter, it was a great early-season start!

We joined a large group for Rim camping near Bear Canyon Lake. To temper myself for so much sitting and extraversion, I split camp with Meia to get a quick hike. It was beyond crowded on the forest roads, but 0.5 miles down the trail was quiet and peaceful. Meia was in her element and so was I. In hindsight (houndsight?), we should have just completed the loop instead of an out-and-back. Next time.

Mid day start at Bear Canyon Lake. It was a Wednesday, so I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be that busy. However, at the easy access points on both sides of the lake were crowds. Families with kids and coolers, loud partying types and people fishing. I had some solitude while hiking around the lake, but couldn’t get out of the main areas fast enough. It was a pretty lake and a casual saunter type hike.
