Drove down Stockton Pass for a good sunset.

Started the afternoon with a visit out to the grave site of Frank "Windy" Cahill in Bonita.
Cahill was Billy the Kid's first kill on August 17 1877.
Love that old west AZ history!

I then drove back down 266 to the Stockton Pass campground for the Shake Trail.
Hiked it up to Trap Spring and back.
Shake & Trap spring boxes were both full.
Met 3 on horseback on the way down.
The lower meadows still look winter, the climb up felt like spring
Awesome sunset with the cattle to end.
AZ history, hike, cowboys & cattle ...
:D

Up Bark Trick half way to the high point overlook.
Then some off-trail down the canyon a bit.
Up just a half mile on the Shake for sunset.
Stormy skies all day, never got wet.
Fun day

Didn't plan on a hike this day, but the power went out at my home.
So ... I drove all the way up to the top of Graham for just a 1 mile hike
It's not like gas prices are high right now
Made it up to the peak in the late afternoon to the always great views down on the Greesewood Mountains.
No ladybugs spotted on the tippy top, but a tad further down in the rocks there were thousands :o
Hiked back down and drove to the Shake Trail for sunset still picking ladybugs out of my clothing and hair.
Had a hammock and coffee sunset at Shake before driving back down.
All wildlife (-ladybugs) spotted was on the drive back home including 1 white tail buck with 3 does, 1 rattlesnake, 1 gopher snake and 1 skunk ... all on the Swift Trail.
Unplanned trip, but a great afternoon/sunset spent in the pines.

SDMB Trail Work/Scouting Report from May 14th, 2023. Scouted and cleared deadfall over 2.2 miles down from the upper Shake Trail Head. Tread is loose, dry and full of pine needles. Fair amount of creep/off camber section. Needs re-benching in many spots but very rideable currently. Removed one 10 inch diameter tree about 1/8 mile down. Also a large piney branch at the very start of the trail is now out of the way. About 2 miles down there is a coat hanger manzanita that wasn't removed. SDMB will return later this summer to work on upper Shake. As noted in a previous report almost all tall grass form the lower 2.2 miles of trail has been trimmed out. Corners on shake flow pretty well. There are some sections that need work but for intermediate and up riders this should be a good adventure run. The trail needs use. Use is work!

SDMB Trail Work Report from May 12, 2023. String trimming was resumed at 1.25 miles up from Stockton Pass CG to the 2.2-mile mark. There is a very small section of grass left before you reach the oaks and the canopy stops the growth. Trail is the most welcoming it's been since spring 2021. Get out and use it! Stockton Pass CG is at 5500 ft and remains fairly comfortable even when temps are hot. Lot's of shade. Riding/Hiking Lower Shake is fairly exposed so you may want to ride early or late. Sunsets are spectacular on the West Side of the Pinaleños Mtns.

Trail report from April 10th, 2023. I spent the morning string trimming the tall grass encroaching on the trail corridor. It's now clear from Stockton pass CG to about the 1.2 miles mark in the uphill direction. Beyond that there still should be some grass, but you will eventually hit the oaks then pines which reduce this growth. Tread is in decent shape. A few stray rocks and some catclaw but not bad. Actually, better than last year. This is a beautiful trail and area. Go check it out. Your use of this trail will slow the regrowth. Stockton Pass Campground is a great place to spend the weekend or hang out before/after a hike. There are pit toilets, shade trees, and picnic tables. You need to bring your own water.

Can't believe Me & Addie have never been on the Bear Canyon or Shake trail together.
Well we changed that today.
Started with lower Bear Canyon and climbed it up 2 miles to one of the awesome overlooks.
Heading back down we stirred up some Yellow Jackets and Addie took 2 hits to the neck and stomach.
Damn ... that hurts! I felt so bad for her :(
We then headed a mile down the road and hiked up the Shake Trail to Shake Spring then back.
That's some awesome scenery out there on the back side of Graham.
Cloud cover most of the day with temps still a tad warm for me.
Wildlife spotted, just lots of cattle.
Wildlife felt, 2 Yellow Jackets :x
Always a good time spent outdoors with my (screamin' & cussin') buddy!

Mount Graham has many super magnificent trails. The shake trail may arguably be in the top 3 for beauty on the mountain. Lots of variety, well-designed, and, pine needles under feet. Difficult in late summer though with the first 2 miles of deer grass up to your arms; so you cannot see your feet. Once in the mountain, it's heaven hiking on well-placed switchbacks. I encountered deer 3 times. Nice to rest on the side of 366 on top.

Not really sure how to log this one?
A little hiking, a little storm chasing & a little car camping.
Would also like to add Deadman Curve, Ladybug Saddle & 127 canyon to the list.
Started low with a blazing humid hot (almost puked) overlook hike to Jacobson Canyon, within 1 hour I was hiking up high through the clouds on the Shake Trail freezing my A off ... amazing experience!
On the way back down had to van shelter from a big rain/hail storm at Twilight.
Crazy mountain weather, monsoons are back.
:D

Myself and 7 volunteers were out on upper and mid Shake the weekend of June 18 and 19th 2022. We cleared brush in some manzanita and madrone overgrowth areas. We also worked to rake out the tread of piney debris and restored the tread about 1 mile in from the upper trail head as it had completely faded near a meadow. 3-4 downed trees were hand sawed out. Got hailed on both days coming back up to the car as some pretty good t-storms rolled through. This makes for a great summer out and back hike 2.5mile round trip with about 1700 foot of gain.

The trail below the 2.3 mile mark has a number of tread creep, drainage and braiding issues. One section of the trail near the creek at around mile 2.4 was nearly completely gone to tread creep. I benched that section back into the hillside so you won't slide down the hill trying to get through that section. The lower 2.5 miles need more work but it's in quite good shape for a Mt Graham trail. Hope to get some more work done this winter on the lower section of Shake and Bear. Our next volunteer trail maintenance day will be Aug 20-21 on the middle section of Bear Canyon Trail.

Note: I added a route to this triplog with the current GPS track of the entire trail from top to bottom. This GPX file was shared by a buddy who biked through the trail from top to bottom. I'm sharing this because most of the existing tracks on Hike AZ and other sites using OSM are currently incorrect. The upper trail head is about 3/4 mile further up the Swift Hwy headed toward Shannon Campground. There's a paved pull out on the left hand side of the hwy. In the woods there is a Shake Trail sign and then another sign which indicates it's current actualy mileage which is 5.1 miles. The trail loses about 3100ft of elevation. Good stuff to know. Have fun out there. Update: It looks like HikeAZ adopted my GPX track submission as the official route. I would cauation that is probably not accurate at a granular level but it should be much more accurate than what was previously shown.

Being one of my wish list hikes, I came over to inspect this area. With limited time, I hiked to the Shake Spring and back. It was nice. This and Bear Canyon may be a little too hot to hike from bottom to top, in summer. Plenty of options on the mountain and this will remain come fall.

Tank was full and the tap had excellent flow when opened. Sign says nonpotable, btw.

Trail report from March 3, 2022 on the lower 2.5 miles of trail up from Stockton Campground. SDMB, of Tucson, string trimmed this section of overgrown trail. Tall grass was previously dominating many sections of the trail corridor as a result of the 2021 monsoon. Pictures in my related photo set show the trail immediately after string trimming. The trail should be much more defined now given some wind and a few other folks hiking and mountain biking it in since the March 3rd.

Maintenance remaining on the lower 2.5 miles still needs some catclaw and some loose rocks removed from the tread. The upper 2.1 miles of Shake is in reasonable condition with a few down trees and some areas where the tread needs to be improved. As others have noted it can be a bit difficult to follow out to the Swift Hwy. The open source maps show the trail around mile 3.5 up from Stockton Pass veering to the right/southerly direction. The actual trail veers to the left/northerly direction. See my photo set for a screen shot of a GPS track. All that said, Shake Trail could definitely use more foot traffic to bed in the tread and prevent overgrowth. The idea is to have this trail fully tuned up by Fall 2022.

The Stockton CG at 5700ft has decent sites and reasonable amounts of shade for that elevation/aspect. There are also dispersed sites beyond the official CG gate. There's a social trail connecting to Shake trail behind the first campsite on the left in the pay area. This will bring you along a knoll up to the first cattle gate on Shake. Really good views from this grassy knoll looking south/down range on the Pinalenos. It's a beautiful even more quiet side of the mountain range!

Related to the above mentions: SDMB is regional multi-use, trails advocacy group that has a volunteer agreement with the USFS. SDMB is also supporting maintenance on Arcadia, Ladybug, Round the Mountain and Noon Creek Trails.

A two night car camping and hike trip. Drove from Tucson Monday afternoon to the Stockton Pass Campground. Nice fee required CG, however there's nicer spots to camp just outside of the CG boundaries.

Beautiful and dense Juniper and Oak in the area; plenty of shade and room. Passenger cars can get into the area.

Hiked the Shake trail Tuesday morning. Rudy and I started a bit behind the other hikers which ended up with us losing the trail approaching the Swift Trail junction.

This trail is seldom used and is overgrown in the lower segments. The upper segments are faint, and snow covered in areas. Using GAIA GPS and Rudy's canine route finding didn't help.
Fortunately there's good cell service in the upper portions of the trail. I was able to text Bill and send him my location, he responded they had gotten off trail there too. I decided to wait in a sunny spot, have lunch until they started back to hike down with them.

On the return trip Rudy spotted a deer's foreleg on trail, which nobody remembered seeing hiking up. Back to camp for beers and pizza.

Down along the creek to the overlook and back on Snow Flat.
Down to the first meadow and back on the Shake trail.
Kicked up a fawn a couple feet away bedding down at the meadow.
Mountain looks good right now. The rains have greened everything up and flowers are everywhere.

High chance of thunderstorms projected so I just did some favorite quick out-n-backs.
Shake - Down to the meadow and back. Usually full of sunflowers this time of the year, but not this year.
Twilight - Haven't tried this one since the fire. It's in bad shape and I bailed on this one after only 1/4 mile.
Wet - From Upper Arcadia down the canyon a bit then back. Good water flow and very beautiful.
Noon - From RTM down to the first crossing and back. No water flowing, just a couple of puddles.
6 does, 1 fawn, turkey vulture and several Abert's were spotted this afternoon.

Saw some turning leaves up high & talked with a couple of archery hunters glassing down low,
Summer is starting to wind down ...

Way too many people on the mountain this holiday weekend for me,
Just made a short hike down the upper Shake to the meadow where I knew I would see no one.
Return trip will be made soon, the meadow is about to explode soon with wild colors.

Started the day with the Shake trail up to Shake spring. Had a 2 hour bush camp at the corrals before returning back down. Light rain just on the way back down.
2nd up Gillespie Wash. Took it up to the windmill then back down and under the Highway heading south. Wanted to check on a cool little prehistoric site up the canyon. Light rain most of this hike.
Last up was Bear Canyon. Hiked up to a little hidden campsite I built a few years back for days just like this. Made a fire, brewed some coffee and planned on sunset here. Many big claps of thunder, light rain now turning to moderate and it was time to ditch sunset and get back to the truck.
Steady heavy rain all the way back to Safford. Flash flood warnings for all of Graham County.

Stockton Pass road & area is always scenic. AZ Highways has featured it before as their scenic drive of the month and for good reason. Add in some stormy skies, some rain & some lightning and well ..... that adds bonus excitement to it all!

Finished Shake trail by hiking 1.6 miles down from the top to the Meadow where I turned around on my longest bottom up hike.
Nice hiking, beautiful area, ideal weather, perfect solitude ... A++
The upper trailhead shows some burn damage, but as soon as you start down the trail, that is all left behind.
Found my first ever shed antler - the cutest little antler - laying in the middle of the trail like a gift.
Looked for one geocache - not too hard - and DNF.
Visited a hummingbird that I observed building a nest last week ... nest is now complete and Mama is (presumably) sitting on tiny eggs. :)
Saw, but did not photograph, my first Grace's Warbler.
When I got home, I stopped by the Lake and unexpectedly added 3 more pretty good to pretty darn good birds to my life list in 15 minutes! :y: Gonna throw those photos in too.
