Fun and easier way to do this hike especially with the lower half of the Pinals severely burned in the last fire. Drove to the top and parked at Icehouse trailhead. Started down and immediately ran into the mountain biking trail crew (refer to Chumley's triplog for the full report :) ). Trail sweeping was their game but hiking was ours.

Hiking down Icehouse it was immediately apparent we were a bit early. Some of the prime spots were still mostly green and the lower we descended the greener it got. Eventually we hit the midway junction and followed the trail over to the Sixshooter side. This section was impacted by the burn so we had some brush, downfall and erosion to navigate but could still follow the trail.

Once on the Sixshooter side we were out of the burn zone but still green trees. We ascended to the Sixshooter junction and went down the trail a bit hoping to get some color but nothing materialized. We turned around heading back up Sixshooter toward Ferndell Spring. More color in the top 3/4 mile section to the spring and of course parking lot at Ferndell was really nice as usual. Basically the color was pretty much isolated to the Ferndell Spring and immediate surrounding area.

Headed over to Pinal Peak and lookout rock for lunch. Then instead of hiking the road back to Icehouse we hopped on Middle Trail and Pipeline for most of it. Fun trails as I've never hiked them before. Nice to hit the Pinals again!

Spent Saturday at home doing homethings resulting in a required Sunday outdoors. Recruited Karl for something closeish to town without involving a Sunday afternoon on the 17. I hadn't been back here since Telegraph re-torched it again and figured it would be good to see how things fared.

Past experience had me thinking it was a few weeks early for prime color, but the rest of the checklist worked out so we headed out to hit the mountain anyway. I knew the closures had been lifted a year ago, but didn't properly research and got turned around trying to drive up the washed out road -- which is definitely not open. Had to backtrack to Globe and swing around to Kellner. Somehow I have never actually driven up this road before, I've always hiked the trails up. The drive was longer than anticipated but enjoyable, with the most courteous and attentive dirt road drivers I have ever encountered (they all pulled aside to let me pass within moments of my approach! : app : )

We parked at the top of Icehouse and immediately encountered a trail crew doing maintenance. The 9:30am tower-station-drinking forest-service-shirt-and-badge-wearing volunteer team leader informed me that the trail is still closed. I decided not to argue and had a polite discussion about the unusual trail clearing techniques at work before continuing on by. There was literal sweeping going on. With brooms. The tread was wheelchair smooth, and clear of even the smallest pine needle or leaf. Bare dirt, ready to erode with the first drop of unobstructed flowing water. :-k

The volunteers informed me that these trails are really not meant for hikers, as they are primarily mountain biking trails. Well, that explains it! What wasn't explained is why 10 people were using brooms to clear the first half mile of trail when the next two miles were littered with deadfall, rocks, and erosion. They did say they don't ride or hike back up the hill so it made no sense to me why they would spend so much time manicuring a tiny part of a trail that was largely impassable by bikes anyway. Give it a year or three and they should have the whole thing looking like a bocce court for your hiking pleasure!

While not mtn bike friendly -- at all -- it was absolutely fine to hike. A few quick hops and steps and no problem following the tread. Very low impact burn with no moonscape and plenty of healthy regrowth among all the large trees that all survived the ground fire here.

We made a little shortcut to head over to Telephone, which is thoroughly overgrown and prickly. Apparently this is a hiking trail, not a biking trail  . After reaching the ridge it cleared up nicely and climbing back up toward sixshooter was enjoyable.

We headed down on sixshooter for a bit looking for some great color spots we remembered from past years, but as had been true the whole way so far, it was green, green, and not a sign of anything but green, so we turned back and made our ascent to Ferndell.

Plenty of trailwork has been accomplished on top of the mountain, with numerous trees cut and cleared -- thanks presumably to the mtnbk trail crews. A couple spots of color looked great, and the corner at Ferndell was prime. From here we headed up to Pinal Peak and had a snack on the lookout rock while the buzzing from the new adjacent tower killed far more brain cells than the summit beer did.

From Pinal we avoided roads on the enjoyable Middle Trail and Pipeline Trails heading back to the start. On Joe's recommendation we contemplated Bobtail for exactly zero seconds :) . We'd both been to Signal a couple of times before so we skipped the short walk up to the fire tower and headed back to the truck. A couple of courteous drivers were passed on the drive back down the hill. Uncanny awareness and polititude for drivers here!

Happy to see most of the enjoyable upper half of the mountain will continue to be a worthy hiking destination, despite the fire.

90% all green. A couple of isolated spots of prime color at the highest elevations. Ferndell is always a couple weeks ahead of the rest and fit that description today.

Afternoon adventure from our campsite on Pinal Peak: I hiked from upper Pinal Rec Area campground to Ferndell Trail, turned west, then followed Sixshooter Trail to the Telephone Trail junction. I was sweating going downhill in the humidity, so dunking my shirt into the cool creek water was just amazing. Turned onto Telephone Trail, and thoroughly roamed the area, looking for clues to the Bremen Sawmill site. Discoveries during my exploration: bees! (I turned and ran); an agitated Arizona black rattlesnake (almost stepped on); my missing tent stake; and some old rusty artifacts. Had to soak my shirt once more for the hike back up. Back at camp, the skies clouded over, the wind picked up, a few raindrops fell, and the sound of distant thunder delighted all of us in camp.

Checked with the Fire closure expert and he confirmed that the Pinal's were open. Not much has changed since my last visit here. Took sixshooter up to Ferndell Spring and then returned on the Telephone Trail and finally the Icehouse Trail. When I arrived the Forest Service was working on the gate so I had to park up the road just a bit. Anyway the Sixshooter is in great shape and is an enjoyable hike. The fire did enough damage that the Telephone Trail isn't all that great. Some downed trees and lots of burned terrain. All in all a great hike. Stopped at El Rey afterwards for some tasty Mexican Food.

We went up to Globe the night before to get an early start but even with that we still got late start. About an hour behind schedule we just assumed there would be some night hiking at the end. There is also a gate that is locked at night so we parked down the road which added some mileage.

Our route for the 4X was up Telephone Ridge to the road on top. Then hit Signal Peak and Pinal Peak walking the road between the two. Down to Ferndell Spring on trail #204 and the spring area which had some color but a bit past peak. From there down Six Shooter #197 trail which had some better stretches of foliage lower down and probably the nicest part of 4X. Six Shooter back to the vehicle where we had some lunch and resupply for the second half.

At this point we were at 16 miles so second half was shorter but it was also 230. We headed up Icehouse Canyon Trail #198 with upper Icehouse being the most fall scenic similar to Six Shooter but still past peak. Trail was in good shape and arrived at the road for the easy walk over to Kellner Canyon Trail #242. Down Kellner was relatively easy section with our only obstacle being hiking final stretch in the dark. We managed to get most of way down Kellner before dark but ended up with about hour and half night hike.

It was interesting to see these trails post fire. There has been quite a bit of trail maintenance on all the trails to varying degrees. Kellner had probably the most impressive work in the middle 2 miles which experienced severe burn. Also most of the severe fire damage is in the lower half of the mountain with the top showing only patchy damage at most. Looks like the work is still in progress so hopefully they will be able to work on the worst wash outs and erosion.

Third time is a charm. Yup, took three tries to finally complete the Super Loop.

Upper Icehouse is still my favorite. The trail is in great shape and lots and lots of crunchy leaves.

I picked Wally up at 10AM this morning in Gilbert and we headed back up to fix his broken ball joint. We got to his truck near the Campaign Trailhead at 11:30. By 12:40 he was back on the road so we headed over to Globe and then up to the Sixshooter/CCC Trailhead.

We went up Sixshooter and back down on Telephone Ridge. The burn evidence is everywhere. Luckily the trails are in pretty good shape for the most part. There were a few downed trees to get over and one washed out spot but otherwise pretty easy to follow. Telephone trail is pretty rough due to wash out. Hopefully time will smooth things out.

We were hoping to see a bear but no such luck today. I wonder if they even have anything to eat since so much got cooked?

Afterwards Wally treated to a great meal at La Casita. I'm glad I could assist and glad everything worked out with his Jeep.

Monday morning started (10:00am) with a quick trip out to FR 449A to replace the lower front constant tension ball joint on the Jeep Liberty. I replaced both of these one year ago but the part must have been defective as when we took it apart the joint was dry even thought the dust boot was intact. JJ is no stranger to the auto repair gig and we took about an hour and ten minutes for tear down, replace, assembly and clean up. :o Now it's off to the Pinals for a hike. The hike up Sixshooter was the better part of the loop. The trail was easy to follow and the burn wasn't as bad as the hike down. The trail of the way down was washed out so foot placement was a priority and the manzanita was hit hard by the fire so the bears will need another food source. The hike was at a decent pace and we stopped back in Globe for dinner. Thanks again for all your help JJ. I'm on call now.

Up the Six Shooter, over on the road to the Telephone Ridge, down that to the Telephone trail to the Ice House Canyon, and back to the TH. I guess the AEG is about right, but the miles is a total guess. It was a nice hike. Nice to be out of town, in some cool air, and the birds were really great. Heard only 1 Hermit Thrush in the Ice House area, but that was it. Great views to the north, the White Mts, and I think Blue Jay peak and the north end of the Pinalenos.

Went up to Globe and did the Six Shooter Telephone Trail Loop. Weather was perfect the whole hike. Along the way I experienced several downed trees and a ton of gnats. It got so bad at one point I could hardly continue forward. I was covered with the damn things. I made it to Ferndell Spring where much to my surprise I ran into a small snow patch and then I headed back. The Telephone Trail didn't have the gnat problem which was a welcome reprieve. Saw a little gopher snake and then it was back to the Jeep.

Rare to see snow and a snake on the same hike.

Water was flowing in both canyons.

Up the Six shooter to the Middle and then up to Pinal Peak. It was overcast and thunder rumbled in the distance. Up top my Fenix registered 65 degrees out and that is with my arm temperature. Felt almost chilly. Fall colors are starting to show their faces here and there. A few weeks away from prime time.

About a quarter mile before getting back to the Jeep it started to pour on me. Cut that one close!

Took the Sixshooter Trail up to Ferndell spring and then returned on Telephone. Just about the time I reached Ferndell the clouds started to crack with loud thunder. Then a nice rain for about 30 minutes. This made the return trip a dream. It was in the low to mid 70s all the way back to the car! :y:

No bear sightings on this trip. Just several blue jays and one baby deer.

Temperatures were to reach 90 degrees in the Valley, so we decided to hike higher elevations today. The Six Shooter trail was in good shape. When we reached the Telephone trail, we opted to go on the peak to see the view from there. We ran into two other hikers who had driven to the top and were walking the peak area to take in the views. I liked the Telephone trail on the return with the beautiful manzanita surrounded paths, but the areas that we had to negotiate where the trenching had been done was tiring. We were surprised to see we had gone 15 miles at the end of the hike. Time to hit Los Hermanos for dinner on the way back to Mesa.

A great day on Pinal Mountain with some great company. Joe, Bruce, great seeing you again. Dave, Larry, Dave and Lee, it was great meeting and hiking with you. I hope to see all of you on the trail again soon.

As much as I wanted to complete the entire double loop today, it was not to be. Upon heading up Icehouse after lunch, my legs were heavy and I was laboring. I could feel a brick wall forming farther up on Icehouse, and I was going to hit it. When we reached the Kellner junction, I decided to shut it down and call it a day. I can't say for sure if it would have made a difference today, but it was not a smart move to hike 7+ miles with 2k in elevation gain the day before a 24 mile hike. Doh!

Beautiful colors on the upper sections, and it might see some improvement over the next few days.

5-7 days to peak for the majority. Due to varied elevations and pockets there should be something hitting somewhere between now and the end of October.

First time hiking in Joe's Pinal-A-Palooza death march.

Met a HAZ'er Grimey-Dave (Great to meet you),
Saw AZDesertfather-Dave for the first time in a long time.
Hiked with Widowmaker-Larry, boywithdogs-Lee again
and finally got to hike in the same direction with rayhouston-Ray

After we got past Joe's shortcut and arrived a smidge late to the TH, we began Hiking a bit after 6:15.

The Telephone Trail #192 is not my favorite trail in the area. If you like a Loose, > Steep, Bulldozer cut, then this is the trail for you. I'm amazed the the power shovel will work on grades like that, without tipping over. ETA for completion the Pinal Mountain Cable Replacement, June 2016 (Just under 3 years total).

Splitting from the group, I led Dave ;) and boywithdogs over to the Pipeline Trail #193 and then the Middle Trail #202 to get to Pinal Peak. We spent a few minutes by the towers and then I wanted to show them the Rock Ladder.

Next it was the Ferndell Trail #204 to meet up with the rest of the gang. First time on this one and it was IMHO the more scenic way to get over to Six Shooter from the peak.

After stopping at Ferndell Spring to water the dogs and himself, Lee and Dave felt the need for speed and decided to run down Six Shooter #197. Never Saw Dave again the rest of the day. Me on the other hand put the camera to work. The foliage was so thick at Ferndell Spring, it almost choked out the light 8). There were a few larger pockets of extreme color, but next weekend should be prime.

I caught up to Joe, Ray, Larry and the Dave (Grimey) on the way down and then Lee at the parking area for some lunch.

Up Icehouse Canyon #198 was a slog until just after the Kellner intersection. That's when we got some much needed shade. The rest of the way up was under the canopy, with more pockets of vibrant color.

Down Kellner Canyon Trail #242 for the first time for me. It was unique from the other trails up there.
Spent a bit of time checking out the big Steel Wheel thingy, Steel plated boiler and some of the other artifacts up top. Great views with the fading sun on the way down and to the truck before dark.

Temps on the day ranged from 53 in the morning, to 92 (sun aided) starting after lunch, back down to 59 up top, to 68 when we finished.

Thanks for putting this together Senior Gumdrop and for driving.

Couldn't have been a more beautiful day, start to finish. I was only part of the first half due to time issues, but still totally worth it.

Good catching up with Joe & Bruce, and meeting others for the first time. We went up Telephone Ridge (much better downhill, crimeny that's steep). Brucie, Chandler and I went a little ahead and hit Pinal Peak, the ladder, and covered a few of the little trails on top. So much more to explore up there. Good getting to know Chandler, I have super respect for anyone who serves our country, and he did tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. His love of history is even bigger than mine, so lots to Revolutionary War topics to chat about! I needed to get home, though, and had to leave everyone behind coming down Sixshooter. Chandler took his dogs with him, including one really large white dog Blanco that he picked up from Afghanistan. That dog was so nice, when I took off on the way down ahead of everyone else to get home, Blanco tried to keep up with me. Finally he was a little concerned about his master and turned around to go back to him.

Left 6:17, returned 11:54am.

Anticipation always gets the better of me. I wanted to get in a short hike at higher elevation to help (I hope) acclimate me for a much longer hike I plan to do tomorrow, which is along much of this same route on Pinal Mountain. I thought about going to the Rim Country, but Pinal has been on my mind for weeks now, so why not.

I started my hike at the Ferndell Spring TH and followed Preston's Sixshooter-Telephone Ridge loop. I meant to just do this loop and call it a day, but once I got to the Signal Peak turnoff, I thought why not. And since I did this peak, might as well do Pinal Peak, too. After Pinal Peak, I turned left on 651 and took the Ferndell trail back to the trailhead. I saw a good sized white tail doe bounding across the trail about 50 feet in front of me. Man, I wish I could cover ground like they do. It was there and gone before I could think about getting my camera out.

The sky was mostly cloudy to overcast at the start. The leaves are showing some color in the usual areas, but with little sunshine the scenery was somewhat muted. It started raining when I hit the ridgeline. The forecast was sunny, so I muttered a bit under my breath when it hit. This was turning into a bad idea. Typical Arizona hit and run storm; it came in fast and left just as fast. It was mostly wind with a spraying sideways rain. I huddled next to some manzanita to avoid as much of the rain as I could, then continued on when it stopped.

The sun finally came out just as I was returning to the Ferndell trailhead. Beginning and ending photos show what a difference the sun makes on autumn foliage. Beautiful! Nice hike, rain and all.

3rd Annual PX4

This year offered up deeper hues, crispy leaves and thicker blankets obscuring the trails. Temperatures where storybook throughout. Karl & Kathy tagged along on the first loop after a decent sized hike the previous day. Kelly requested both Signal & Pinal peaks this year so this was PX4+2PKS.

We parked 0.4mi outside the gate for the first loop. After two years of dealing with a grumpy recreation site host a friendly guy has taken over! With no stern warning to be out by 5pm we moved in closer for the second loop. Lunch went down without a hitch. Kelly gave Dave a slice of pizza. Without wasting a nano second, Dave magically wolfed down a mysterious "bite".

Randy & CHUMS were reportedly on Pinal. Dave1 was more in 2 mode and suggested 2.68 billion times of forfeiting the second half. Kelly and Larry set him straight. K² parted ways and we headed up Ice House. Errr... missed the turn, make that Telephone again...lol No worries as it meets Ice midway up. This added a trivial 0.2 mi / 50 ft. Yet better than backtracking and losing a precious 600 ft at the time.

Six Shooter is usually the show. Today upper Ice was my fav. Since jlp switched over to canal patrol he wasn't behind us cracking the stopwatch whip. Leaves were a good 2 inches deep for the final mile. Light through the trees was sweet and sassy.

Last year Dave tried to push "coati" on us claiming the "mundi" is silent. Larry fixed that BS... it's just "mundi", the "coati" is silent.

Topping out on Ice we met CHUMS and Randy. I'd suggested we ride down with Randy but Kelly wasn't interested in the wuss out option. Didn't get as much love out of Kellner this year. CHUMS set a ridiculous morning hike type of pace. Halfway down he turned on the afterburner. We changed the hike to a more relaxed mourning pace!

We followed Randy into what Larry calls LeBron James home town for a post hike mex-americana feast. Dave ordered roughly half his total body weight shocking us all.

Fun day. Great to meet Kathy & see Karl again. Kelly wasn't sure about a big hike but showed us all up. Larry didn't miss a step on the biggest hike of his life. CHUMS got us out before dark. Always good to see Randy. Dave laughed at a bad joke ( we were all tired, Kelly laughed too then punished herself immediately ) so he's okay in my book too.

Met up with the crew Dave, Joe, Larry and Kelly to do the Pinal 4X Super Loop. We ended up doing only 15 miles of the loop while the rest finished the whole 4X. We still had a good autumn show in Six Shooter Canyon but did miss out on meeting up with Randy and Chumley and seeing Dave eat half his body weight in Mexican food :)

Very nice on top with cool temps on Signal and Pinal Peaks. Six Shooter canyon had quite the autumn display going and a good trail coming down. Once we reached the bottom had lunch with everyone and said goodbye as they were heading back up to complete the 4X. Good to hike with Dave and Larry for the first time...hopefully next year we will have the energy to do the entire 4X loop.
