The forecast called for snow and I didn't want to camp in a cold storm, but knew that in October we'd have to be there early to catch the best conditions before it melted. So after an early drive up north we were presented with a perfect wintry autumn morning.

To avoid the cluster that is Aspen Corner, we set out from Hart Prairie, crossed Snowbowl Road, and found our way up to the Kachina Trail. A handful of other hikers were enjoying the day in the first 12 feet of the trail, and after that there was nobody else. Borderline comical if you really think about it.

On the return, we considered hitting Agassiz for a bevvy, but the traffic near HP quickly put the kibosh on that plan, and upon seeing the shoulder to shoulder line of people heading down the nature loop, we opted to skip that part for a more direct path through the prairie. As is 100% reliable here, we encountered at least a dozen deer enjoying the afternoon.

The forecast had called for scattered snow showers with some accumulation all day ... none of which materialized as clear skies dominated. That changed as we set out to find somewhere to camp, with a fierce evening snow squall that quickly dumped 3-4 inches, reduced visibility, and made finding somewhere dry and clear impossible, even 2000 feet lower in elevation.

So, alas, camp was a bit of an adventure, but we were prepared enough to make it an enjoyable night. It never did stop snowing, though the ground melt offset the snowfall somewhat with only about 8" of accumulation in the morning.

We spent a few hours enjoying the hills around the peaks before heading back down to the valley.

You can never be sure when the first real snowfall of winter happens (sometimes not until January!), so I'm glad I made the effort to take advantage of this brief October aberration.

Started from busy pull off from snow bowl Rd. From what I saw last weekend, didn't want to park at Humphreys TH. Finally started on section 34 again after several years.

Chill pace till Bismarck lake JCT. At that point one member of our group turned around. We then decided to attempt a shortcut. Was a fun adventure on this unmaintained trail till we hit the logging area. SMH

With large piles of logs left behind again, effectively acting as kindling, this is the complete OPPOSITE of what they claim to be accomplishing. Plus, the scattered downed trees made it nearly impossible to follow the old trail.

Obviously, we took the traditional AZT trail back. An unleashed dog menaced a couple of us. Rained only briefly. I got ahead so I added the mini loop to the route. Another very full day away from the heat.

Long loop around Humphreys but fun. We started from Snowbowl parking lot with the masses unfortunately but they thinned out as we ascended. By the time we reached the summit saddle we were in the clouds and a light snow was falling. Wind was brutal on the saddle so we quickly descended down the Weatherford trail and away from the masses. Continued on Weatherford to Inner Basin and since the road was partly closed the usual crowds were not an issue.

Stopped at the pumphouse for a break after enjoying some fall color in the basin. Then continued on the Waterline road to enjoy some more fall color. Very nice hiking on the road and great way to enjoy the foliage. Eventually we made it to the Bear Jaw turn off and descended down to the parking lot.

From there the not fun began. We had about 2 miles of off trail to where it meets the AZT. Lots of down trees and general messiness to hike through but eventually reached the AZT and nice trail.

AZT was a fast track back to Snowbowl with some fall color and late day sun made views over Hart Prairie scenic. Reached Snowbowl parking lot as it was getting dark and quite cold. Full day with the long loop!

I came up with this plan a month or so ago to take advantage of the pipeline closure area and hopefully hit some seasonal highlights. I had two weekends in mind, and we ended up choosing this over next. It didn't earn this name until it started snowing and we had only made it 20% of the way  .

In the time since making the plan, CNF updated the closure area, making it a little bit easier to get up here, but we decided to stick to the plan anyway.

Ryan and I drove up Friday and camped in Hart Prairie. The aspens were lemon-lime and the peaks took on some afternoon clouds above 11k which did not break for the next 3 days. We met up with SlowandBi9L :o at Snowbowl in the morning. It was a little bit jarring to my mental psyche exactly how many vehicles were already at the trailhead at this somewhat early hour! This is exactly the feces this planned route was supposed to avoid! ](*,)

Nonetheless, the handful of groups we encountered were quickly forgotten as we made steady progress uphill. We hit the cloud deck at around 11k, and it provided obscured views and some unexpected snow flurries. At the saddle we attempted to take a break, but the wind was miserable and the temps in the cloud and snow dropped to 34, so we put some effort into getting over to the basin and drop some elevation as quickly as we could. (None among us felt the need to add any mileage today to visit a peak we've all been to for the 50-feet views we would be blessed with!)

Near the bottom of the long Weatherford switchbacks we dropped below the clouds and got our first glimpses of the golden basin below. After a short stop at Doyle Saddle, we headed down 29, which has eroded into a rockfest that makes me reconsider my previous opinion of Y-Bar.

We encountered the basin's only other hikers hikers near the bus stop enjoying fall colors and some mushrooms. From here we took a delightfully tibberlike stroll across the Waterline over to Bear Jaw (lots of stops for photos). These 3 or 4 miles were the prime color spots on the day and made all the suffering worth it.

The crux was always going to be the 2 miles from ABJ to AZT. A mile or so was easily maneuvered via old two tracks and some pleasant meadows, but sort of as expected there was some slow going with thick forest and deadfall linking together with random elk tracks before reaching the AZT.

A few miles of mild uphill with great views and stunning autumn things brought us back to the start where dozens of tourists were enjoying the sunset views across Hart Prairie.

It got chilly fast as the sun disappeared and after a long day we went our separate ways to partake of food and beverage as a well-earned reward after this big loop in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness.

I'd actually like to see the FS establish a route between ABJ and AZT as I believe that the Flagstaff trail running population would really enjoy this loop without the extra mileage and annoyance of a few miles on the 418. Not holding my breath.

A couple spots in the upper IB past prime. Waterline and upper Bear Jaw perfect. Snowbowl, Aspen Corner, Nature Loop pockets of gold, but still a lot of green.

I glanced at my self momentum stats for the first time in a few months and realized that to catch Dixie on the all-important peaks list, I had to get one or two more.

I immensely enjoy this trail and summiting this mountain, but in an uncommon occurrence it's an opinion that a lot of other people also share. In recent years the checklist crowd has moved this one down my list so I was thrilled to see that a special event would be closing the Snowbowl Road access to the trailhead, effectively closing the trail itself.

As I'm not opposed to a little extra mileage and gain, I set off from the 151, reaching the empty trailhead at Snowbowl in under an hour and proceeding up a deserted wilderness trail on a beautiful summer Saturday without the threat of severe weather.

The wind was fierce above the saddle and I could have used a long sleeve option, but instead took a quick turn at the summit to get back below the treeline. All in all, it was a delightful day on the mountain. They should close the road more often!

The north upslope side of Aspen Corner was full-on and peak, maybe a little past peak. The lower side was way past peak with many aspens bare. No worries, the other side of the road more than made up for it and was spectacular!

I needed to get some altitude training/miles in and I'm not a fan of nooner monsoon storms on mountain peaks so I camped at Hart Prairie and set out for Humphreys at 4:45am on the AZT.

Snowbowl at 5:30
Saddle at 7:05
Summit at 7:45.
Snowbowl at 9:50
Back at camp at 10:15.
Woke up from nap... tbd.

I passed 10 people along the way and there was one on the summit when I arrived. Weather was perfect. Light breeze and no bugs.

On my way down I passed 36 ascenders before getting to the saddle. From the saddle to Snowbowl I passed another 326 on their way up. :o Though probably 75% of them were on the top half as not too many probably started much after 8am.

I really like starting at Hart Prairie. The extra couple of miles are scenic and there are always deer in the morning. Plus, it makes it a 4k hike that way. Which has always been super imortant to me! : rambo :

After snowshoeing up the Dutchman Glade route in the morning, I wanted to take advantage of being on the mountain. I miss my pines and snow.

This is my new favorite place to cross-country ski in northern AZ. I didn't realize how gentle the slopes are below the Snow Bowl parking lot, but there are many rolling hills and opportunities for Nordic skiing. I'm glad I got to experience this before the snow is gone.

On my way down the hill, I heard a familiar sound. Part of Hart Prairie Creek is exposed below 8,800ft. It's really amazing to see the surface water break through the deep snow pack that surrounds it. This was definitely the highlight of this particular loop, but I will be back next year to connect with the AZT and several of the other features this area has to offer.

water 1 out of 5water 2 out of 5water 3 out of 5water 4 out of 5 Galinas Tank 76-100% full 76-100% full
The was that flows into this creek is running strong. Surface water breaks the snow surface at just around 8,800ft

I was camped in Hart Prairie and trying to decide what to do for my Sunday. Having camped two nights above 8000 feet I figured I was acclimated enough to attempt Humphreys. I estimated it would take me more than half an hour to drive to Snowbowl, so I decided to just start hiking from camp. Hart Prairie in the morning was peaceful and serene. I must have seen over 100 deer in several herds each counting in the dozens. :)

Eventually I hit the AZT, and then the Nature Loop, though I cut a few of those useless switchbacks. The parking lot was busy, but the trail wasn't, which was nice. The register had 96 entries from Saturday. Presumably that would mean more than 300 people had hiked this trail the day before :o I was only the 8th entry at that point Sunday.

I made great time up the mountain, getting from the trailhead to the summit in 2.5 hours. From the saddle to the summit and back I wore hat, gloves, and a windbreaker as there was a cool breeze. The clear skies of early morning had turned to ominous clouds and it snowed for a few minutes while I was on the summit. I absolutely love dramatic clouds. I had the peak to myself but didn't stay more than 10 minutes before heading back down.

On the return trip, I took the higher traverse to the Agassiz Lodge where I was startled to find a line of people at least 200 deep waiting to ride the scenic chairlift. :o

I followed the maintenance road that traverses the ski slopes to the maintenance yard and continued down the powerline road. From there I turned downhill on an old road cut until it met up with the Kachina Trail and then did a little off-trail exploring in some nice glades with plenty of aspen. My route brought me out at Aspen Corner which was in absolutely prime color, and apparently half the population of Flagstaff was there to enjoy it.

I skipped the actual road/trail down Aspen Corner/Polar Aspen Alley to avoid the people and just dropped straight down toward camp below Alfa Fia for a fantastic day. There are some beautiful areas south of Snowbowl on the east side of the road, but it's easy to get caught in the wrong drainage too. There are a bunch of mountain bike paths too. I'd like to explore some of this area and get routes on a map as I'm sure there are some pretty good loops to be made in the shade of these pines and aspens.

After hanging out atop of Fern Mountain for the afternoon I decided to drive to another area that my high school football team ran to during our Camp Colton conditioning days.

I walked around in the aspen groves for ahwhile searching for some of the red tinted aspens I saw when atop F.M. earlier in the day. I was also just making sure my pups got her chance to play outside since I would be leaving her at my parents house for the next couple of days.

What turned into a peaceful moment of relaxation at the Alfa Fia Tank soon turned into a nightmare that left me running away with a feeing of nausea. :?
It was a pack of tourists :sk: I mean a literal pack of 30 or so ho hum people that swarmed upon the tank like a flock of thirsty Wildebeests.
I originally wanted to stay for sunset but I don't think you could have paid me to do that after I was bombarded by all the goobers.

On an early autumn day we went to see among the first of the leaf-changing aspens at the corner. Plenty others from the Valley joined us, and the trail/photo spots were busy, although it emptied out with the exception of a few mountain bikers on the outer extents of the trail. The trail and a road converged on the loop we created and at one point we walked straight into someone's hunting camp. Friendly folks although we cautiously approached considering the only view at 11am included rifles, beer cans, and half empty crown royal flasks :).

Nice trail - although the aspens on the other side of the mountain at lockett meadow on the way to inner basin are much denser. Only a little rain got to us, although a storm was brewing higher on the mountain.

We just needed a good car trip up north. This seemed to fit the bill nicely. I'd wanted more wildfowers but we substituted in some mushrooms. The rain jackets came out at the end as the storm finally came through and dropped a lot of water and hail. We off trail meandered in but hiked the trail (then a waterfalling river) out.

Started at Aspen Corner around 11am and headed down to the AZT and headed north. It was warm initially but the clouds built up over the course of the hike so the second half was quite nice. I turned around at a really nice grove of aspens that was pleasantly mixed with a dense groundcover of bracken ferns. Spent a few minutes here taking photos as clouds passed in front of the sun. On the return I took a detour up the northern leg of the Aspen Loop, then off-trailed it through the meadows to get back to Aspen Corner, stopping to shoot butterfly-covered sneezeweed along the way. Great hike, got my aspen, fern, and wildflower fixes taken care of in one shot!

Most widespread were the tiny white and yellow daisy types. Occasional lupine, locoweed, and sneezeweed.

Just can't get used to the name on this one--the locals call it Alfa Fia Tank. I guess the entire trail is the alley... Anyway, decided to attempt some landscapes (not my forte) at sunset since I had just come off the Schultz Creek/Sunset/Dry Lake Hills area and was close.

After Veit Springs, I drove up the road to this one. Walked a bit of the trail on the uphill side of the road, it seems to be more of a mountain bike trail as I saw numerous jumps. I have a hunch that this connects to the Veit Springs Trailhead. Turned around at the jumps and head down to Alfa Fia Tank.

Took the trail on the left out of the parking area, which descended through a dense, rocky section of forest. Eventually hit the Arizona Trail, which I took north to Alfa Fia Tank. I was excited as fluffy clouds were floating over the Peaks and the sky didn't look as ominous as my Hart Prairie trip the week before. I was hoping for better light on the Peaks for pictures. Wandered around looking for nice compositions as the sky grew darker and darker.

Right before the sun went down, a menacing cloud began to swoop down the western slopes of the mountain. The wind picked up dramatically, the quaking in the stand of aspens to the south west was eerie. I could see the torrential sheets of rain blanketing the slopes of Humphrey's and Agassiz. Bursts of lightning jumped from cloud to cloud. I cursed as I knew this beast of a storm was headed right at me. One part of me wanted to stay and take pictures of the lightning flashes, another part of me wanted to scurry up to the safety of my car. I waited a few more moments to get a few more shots, but the flashes were to quick. I made a run for it.

I retracted the legs of my tripod as I bolted toward the aspen grove to the west where my car was parked. It looked like it was getting drenched. As I ran I set my f-stop to 3.5 and tried to take pictures of the lightning. I could feel sprinkles pelting me from above. My pace slowed as I struggled to get my camera into its bag. I wished I had put my rain jacket on, but it was too late now. I finally got the zipper unstuck on the camera bag and resumed sprinting uphill. As I entered the aspen grove, sprinkles turned into a torrent of fat, beastly drops. I ripped the headlamp out of my pocket and strapped it to my head, but it wasn't necessary with the bright flashes of electricity directly directly overhead.

As I got in my car and drove off, I was completely soaked. I couldn't have been in the downpour for more than 5 minutes. Rain continued to pound, and my descent down Snowbowl Road was slow. The lightning above would cast an incredible glare across the water logged roadway, and at times I would be blinded for a couple seconds. I guess I should expect no less during the monsoon season.
