Didn’t see a write-up of the Vultee Arch hike from HWY 89 on HikeAZ though Sterling Canyon (west side) to the arch, and Hwy 89A to Sterling Pass (east side) are separately chronicled. WildpathsAZ stats for this hike are: mileage-5.1; elevation gain-2186’. Took us geezers (70 year-olds) 5 hours round-trip including an hour lunch at the arch. Hi temp was about 60. A total of five liters (one liter drank by our two dogs) were carried and we returned with one so one liter per person used. Cool and windy at the pass so we didn’t linger. Light gloves, beanie cap, and another fleece layer would’ve been nice but didn’t want to carry the extra weight. Top-half of 89A to Sterling Pass is very steep and rocky enough to require handholds a few times—almost scrambling. Sterling Pass to Vultee is not as steep and easier footing—not nearly as many of the hassock-sized rocks you will encounter on the 89A to Sterling Pass side. Encountered about 15 hikers on the trail, with another 14 or so at the arch by way of Sterling Canyon. We thought the arch was a tad anticlimactic compared to the big views of red rocks, vegetation, etc., but still worth the pain to see it. Like a lot of other hikes in the area, this one should be excellent for viewing fall color and what one of us called the ‘elfin oak grove’, on the downhill after the Pass. Our 45 lb. dogs handled the trails without assistance but smaller dogs may need the occasional boost.

I’d say pretty close to peak colors out there today. It’s been a long couple months so happy to get outside.

One of my favorite spots in Sedona. Sedona was extremely crowded, but 4 of the 8 parking spots at Sterling Trailhead were totally available. Started at 1250. The weather was great - low 60s and mostly cloudy. There were patches of very intense fall colors throughout the ascent. Surprisingly, the maples and oaks at the saddle were completely green with no trace of fall colors and no leaves on the ground. This is usually the best spot for the fall colors, but not this weekend. We climbed out onto a couple lookout points to check out the views. On the descent, the foliage remained green throughout the first 5 switchbacks, but then we were treated to bursts of intense color as we descended further. The bottom was all green. We proceeded over to the arch and I confronted my fear of heights for a few minutes on the arch until the wind picked up further. We did some modeling shoots at the arch, then headed back. We were again stunned by the intense fall colors and views from the saddle along the way.

This is my second favorite hike in Sedona (after Mount Wilson). Beautiful views, few people, some fun rocks to climb on, a few spots to get the heart rate up, and great fall colors. It was surprising that the foliage was all green on top of the saddle. It'll probably be bursting with color in a couple weeks.

Fall colors occur in patches here, but those patches had absolutely brilliant colors. Surprisingly, the oaks and maples were all uniformly green at the top of the saddle.

Finally did a big loop i have wanting to do for years. Probably more than i am ready for at the moment, but the time was right nonetheless so i just did it anyway.

started at wilson mountain TH and went CCW. i had premier weather for the day and on a gorgeous thursday in sedona i saw about 10 people all day. all of the trails are in great shape with the highlights for me being wilson mountain and sterling pass, as well as dropping down brins mesa but really the whole thing is pretty awesome (except the short death defying walk up 89A between N wilson mountain and sterling pass. :o )

Delightful day and happy to finally knock this one off my list

Pleasantly surprised by the amount of shade and foliage on this hike. As you get closer to Vultee Arch, several confusing social trails appear, but it seems some good citizens have helped by putting branches or rock barriers across most of them. Do watch out for poison ivy! I wore shorts and was constantly scanning the ground so I could avoid brushing up against any. Pants are just a good idea, especially because it's overgrown. There are a few logs to get over, but it's mostly in good shape.

Prescott trip with Ryan, day 3, part 2:
Grabbing the last of the 4 or so uncomfortably close to the highway parking spots along 89A, Ryan and I started climbing west up to Sterling Pass. It had been probably 10 years since my last hike on this trail, and I had forgotten how beautiful this canyon was. After a thorough workout climb in wretched humidity we crested the pass and began dropping down the west side. Some brilliant red sumac foliage and a hint of red maple on the west side. Amazing scenery too. We passed about 10 other hikers, which was more than I expected. We saw Vultee Arch, and then made the return trek over the pass. Ridiculous amounts of poison ivy in places on this trail, which I attempted to remove with alcohol wipes at the truck. Ryan wisely wore pants, I never do or will. Only a bit of ivy rash on one ankle for a week, not too bad. Great hike and a nice end to our 3 day hiking road trip.

I hiked Sterling Pass in mid-March. I arrived early, just at daybreak, to make sure to find parking, as parking consists of just a roadside sliver, just wide enough to fit a short line of cars single file. Once parked, you should find no issues locating the trail head, as it is marked (when I hiked) with one of those iconic historic iron signs. Similarly, no issues with the trail itself. Easily followed. Note, Sterling Pass trail does climb steep and rugged, but I found that more invigorating than challenging, and did not hit any places requiring hand scrambling.

As you hike, I would say stop and look around for views out, up and down, as these will appear at various and different points along the trail, but not everywhere, given the tall pine forest. Also, be on the lookout for short spurs and ledges branching off the main trail, as they can lead to awesome and amazing overlooks. Of some interest, the forest surrounding the trail, mainly on the way up, shows evidence of past fires, and a good bit of tree removal/cutting looks to have been done to keep the trail clear (relatively, downed trees still crossed the trail at times, during my hike.)

Now, on the side trail up to Vultee Arch, I again found no issues finding the trail head, as a sign clearly marks the start of the branch up. The side trail up to the arch does runs a good bit steeper and more rugged than the main trail, but not a real issue. One issue involves coming back down – spur legs run off the arch trail at times. I needed my GPS track to check I was going down from the arch in the same way as I climbed up.

The arch itself sits majestically on the mountain side, visible at different points as one approaches. Quite enchanting, with the arch sweeping out majestically from the mountain itself. A nice sight. Worth the effort. Of course the hike offers many other views besides the arch. Great views and scenes appear throughout, from enormous spires and long vistas, to the tall pines and sheer rock faces, down to the intricacies of the strata lines and jutting rock towers.

Another note/caution on the parking. Route 89A curves and sweeps, with traffic coming fairly fast in both directions. I found coming southbound, with my cell phone directions on Sterling Pass Trailhead, useful in know when the parking was coming up, so I could pull in smoothly without issues. It is not clear to me one can readily (safely) come northbound and make a U-turn, nor if one could stop and readily (safely) hunt around stopped looking for a spot.

Well some people and a dog hiked this trail .75 in to about 5,500 so that helped the snow steps.
After that, it was on us to break trail on all the route squiggles. Got pretty deep, but the trail is called Sterling Pass so you just don't stop before that. It started raining a little at the pass so we didn't stick around too long.
Miss the trail and find some very deep spots :)

Early morning hike in Sedona. Wanted to do this a few months ago but had a hard time seeing the roadside TH in the east morning light. This time, having the location of the TH determined I was able to get there and get on the trail around 7am. Not a huge fan of roadside parking, but there is a nice pull out area just south of the Manzanita Campground which I took advantage of. This forced a little bit of a roadside walk, but I was ok with that.

The Sterling Pass Trail is definitely an uphill trail. It was easy to follow and open enough that the danger of hiking through poison ivy was minimal. Paused a couple of times to catch my breath and taken in the views...which were fantastic. Most of the trees had lost their leaves, but that allowed the towering mountain walls to be on full display. Made it to the top of the pass and was met by a strong breeze coming in from the west.....brrrrr! I discovered that the stated mileage of 2.2 is what takes to reach this point. If you want to do the whole trail and see the arch it’s another 1.7 miles.....and we’ll worth it. The views on the interior are just as fantastic as the views on the east side. The west side is more wooded, providing an abundant amount of shade and a nice intimate feeling to the trail. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of elevation that is lost on the way to the arch, though the switchbacks are more gradual. The arch isn’t as impressive as the Devils Bridge but still an incredible geological feature and I didn’t have to stand in line to see it. Well worth the effort! The return trip was easier and went by quickly. Didn’t see anyone until I was half way down from the pass when I encountered 3 separate groups heading up. Wildlife was minimal... a lot of birds in the brush. Weather was great, though a little chilly with the wind. Definitely hope to get back again.

The forecasted high temp was 60°, but it was already 70° when we started around 11am and got warmer from there.

Sterling Pass trail is absolutely beautiful. Over half the leaves were on the ground, but there were still a lot of orange and red in the trees, which looked amazing superimposed on the colors of the canyon walls. There was also a small amount of snow along the trail, despite the temperature.

The trail begins climbing immediately at the trailhead, and overall it's a moderate uphill to the top of the pass, then downhill over many, many, many switchbacks, then a slight uphill to the arch, which is really fun to see in person. This is an amazing natural wonder. There are many overlooks along the Sterling Pass trail that are fun to climb up to see the different perspectives of the canyons. There's also a flat rock area along the side of the arch trail which is a great place to stop and eat. We climbed around on top of and under the arch. I wouldn't go onto the arch if it's wet, but it's easier than it looks when the rock is dry.

Heading back the same way provided more amazing views as we climbed back up and over the top of the pass, again via the many switchbacks. Definitely will visit again. Certainly in the fall.

Fall colors were past their peak, a lot of leaves were on the ground, but substantial fall colors remained on the trees throughout Sterling Pass trail. No fall colors on the trail to Vultee arch, mostly manzanita and pine.

This was a fun day on two trails I hadn't previously hiked. While the Sedona area can be a bit of a mess on autumn weekends, once you leave the highway, it is possible to avoid the crowds if you put a little bit of effort into it.

The colors were great and this one has some nice views and a solid workout. The arch was a great destination. I got to hike with a few people I hadn't met before, and it's always nice to match real-life personalities to the posts and pictures. We opted for a simple outnback over making a lasso loop in favor of a follow-up hike in the afternoon.

My dad and I hiked this trail for the first time and continued to Vultee arch. The climb was a great workout. There were a few trees to climb over or under on the trail before we crossed the wash approaching the arch. The arch was way cool and we were the only ones there! The hike back down to the car was the worst for me. Steep and slippery. The color was nice and it looks like it will be getting better.

One of my favorite Sedona loops that is tough to get takers. A mile of scarce shoulder highway between Sterling Pass Trail #46 and North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is the issue.

I suggested 6 hikes and Bruce selected this loop. Figured with an early start knocking out the hwy first, it might not be so dangerous. We lucked out. Dave was returning home from a multi-day trip up north. Shuttle plus classic Dave one liners as a bonus!

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123
Typically I prefer the spectacular Autumn foliage display. Late spring green after the better than average rainfall since January was a nice change of scenery.

Wilson Mountain Trail #10
We passed 3 or 4 little groups heading down from Wilson Bench. Tread could use a rake crew.

Jim Thompson Trail #124
Bumping this from 2 stars to 3. Easily higher if weren't for all the nearby world class options.

Cibola Pass & Jordan Trail
Arizona Cypress is one of my favs. Red Rock backdrop makes it sing.

Soldier Pass Trail #66
World class trail packs a mean punch. Never gets old for me. Not busy as the mercury rises. Shockingly had Soldier Arches to ourselves for the majority of lunch until a friendly mother and daughter arrived.

Brins Mesa Trail #119
Not my fav. Highlight was helping out a happy foreign tourist family.

Vultee Arch Trail #22
Abundant rainfall this year has this one feeling like a jungle. Shade in the late afternoon makes ccw favorable.

Sterling Pass Trail #46
Rocks hard IMO. Steep both sides but the views are worth it.

Dave Joined us and since he was meeting us there, we could set up the mini shuttle, avoiding the 1 mile road walk between Trailheads.

Up the North Wilson Trail, we notice quite a bit of recent trail maintenance. So recent, it was from the previous day as noted by @mt98dew in his triplog.

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is a much better option in getting to the top of Mt Wilson IMHO. Prettier, more cover, less traffic and a steady climb.

Plenty of flora still Flora-ing all around this loop today.

Down Wilson Mountain Trail #10 on the southside, is a bit rocky at the top. We saw our first groups of hikers on this trail.

Cutting in front of Steamboat Rock, on the Jim Thompson Trail #124, was a first for me. Easy trail and great views. You did not have to concentrate on where you were walking and could enjoy the scenery.

Cibola Pass and the Jordan Trail got us over to the Devils Kitchen sinkhole. From here we headed up the Soldier Pass Trail #66, to our next destination. We surprisingly had had Soldier Arch to ourselves for lunch.

We exited the arch through the top and made our way to the "Eye in the Sky" and then hitting the Brins Mesa Trail #119. This trail has a few interesting areas, mush-so-more that the FR152C road walk. This was the hottest part of the day.

The Vultee Arch Trail #22 was in decent shape, up to the turn to the Arch and had much needed tree cover.

Past this point is the Sterling Pass Trail #46. It is a bit "Thick" from all the spring moisture, but it only lasts a 100yds or so. The climb starts gradual and goes to butt kicker up to the pass. From here, it drops even steeper and rockier down to 89a.

A good hike. In the direct sun with no wind, bordering hot for me. Luckily, we had a decent breeze and tree cover for the bigger climbs. Good seeing Dave again. Joe was there too. :D It'd been a few weeks.

Whew!!! This was work. The Sterling Pass Trail starts uphill and continues sometimes steeply for 1.5 miles and over 1,000' aeg. There were some switchbacks during the top .5 mile. That's just to the top of the pass. We planned to go to Vultee Arch so that was another 1,000' downhill to the Vultee Arch Trail mostly on switchbacks which we would have to climb on the way back. The hike to the arch itself was another very steep but short climb. We planned to continue on the Vultee Arch Trail to FR152, but knowing what we had to do to get back to my car on 89A we decided to turn around and not continue to FR152.

While it was a lot a work especially for an old guy like me, the hike was very rewarding. The very interesting rock cliffs enclosed the area and were ever changing as we hiked along. I couldn't enjoy them as much as I wanted because I was focused on my footing; lots of rocks, roots, steps and drop-offs. I'd do it again if I lost 20 pounds and got in better shape.

The "3 Passes" loop in Sedona is one that has gotten somewhat popular in the trail running community. I was looking for something around 20 miles, and with Sedona having received significant snow the weekend prior, I thought this would be a good opportunity to check it out.

This guide is the closest thing I could find to 3 Passes - I believe the only difference is this goes directly up Brins Mesa instead of going up Soldier Pass trail.

I started from Jordan TH and went clockwise, so as to do the three passes in order from shortest to highest.

Everything was pretty normal until I topped out on Brins Mesa, where it was extremely muddy, and I tried my hardest to avoid the soft areas in order to avoid ruining the trail. Probably wasted effort, since everybody else was just going through the mud. The descent down the canyon on the north side was beautiful, which the creek flowing about as much as one can expect, and some snow still on the ground.

Heading up Dry Creek road was unremarkable other than having to zigzag around to avoid the small ponds on the road.

Vultee Arch trail was new to me; I have to say it was in top form. Beautiful canyon, and when I hit Sterling Pass trail it was all icy snow. There was no sunlight in this area, so this made the ascent a bit sketchy in places, very slow, but still a lot of fun. Saw a couple of hikers at the top. The east side was a bit better, although there were 2-3 really icy spots on steep slopes.

The mile or so on the 89 was by far the worst part of the route, and it was especially bad with snow banks on the shoulder. Basically had to run on the lane stripe. This was motivation to keep moving.

North Wilson trail was fantastic. It was actually more clear of snow than Sterling Pass, and on the way up, I noticed a huge temporary waterfall across the canyon. Probably a rare sight. The bench at the top was muddy with lots of freshly melted (i.e., cold) snow that was up to six inches deep in places. I had hiked up Wilson Mtn to the North Wilson junction the previous weekend (the day after the snow fell), and it's definitely a little easier going without waist-deep snow up there...

Once past Wilson Canyon (where I missed the Jim Thompson turn and ended up almost going to Midgely Bridge), I was just ready to be done. That last couple miles was a bit of a slog, but it was a small price to pay to see Sedona in top form.

Took Sterling Pass over to Vultee Arch - made it out of Sedona before the chaos of Memorial Day weekend and lots of other closures in Arizona ensued.

My original plan was to do Vultee Arch from Dry Creek, but after driving only about a third of it to get to Devil's Bridge, I thought I would spare my beloved Taco the bruising and drive around and bag it using the Sterling Pass approach. Several setbacks and a phone call had me soon had me pressing for time, so I was only able to go up to the saddle and I had to turn around. Never enough time.
Very nice fall color and some cool red rock and tafoni.

What's not to like? Arrived early and had the canyon to ourselves until at the pass on the return. So much to enjoy you hardly notice the gain loss regain of elevation. Didn't track this one because it was for beauty and not strength. Decided to splurge on a meal rather than eat pack snacks. Seeing the line of cars as we were leaving made us glad for our 530a start from Phoenix.
