Early morning hike in the Goldfields. Started from the Hackamore TH around 7am. My goal was to do the loop as described, but knowing the Goldfields and all the side trail, I had downloaded the route just to make sure I didn’t get sidetracked. This turned out to be a good thing as the trail alternates between road, wash and faint trail.

The trail takes off from the TH following a road. Around .5 miles in the trail leaves the road and the loop starts. I opted to go clockwise. Either direction seemed to head off trail, but going clockwise, there was a trail that came pretty close to the downloaded route. This trail was solid and easy to follow, but didn’t last long before crossing Trail 309 and dropping down into a wash. The trail follows the wash for a bit before exiting the wash to the east. I didn’t see the trail exiting the wash, but the gps came in handy to get me back on the trail. The trail was faint, but evident as it headed up towards a saddle that sloped down the NW side of peak 2297. Once the trail reaches the saddle it connects to Trail 309 and follows it north.

I actually left my planned route and decided to hike to the top of 2297. (Note: there is actually trail signage on trail 309 that refers to this peak as 2409). Fairly easy scramble to the top with mediocre views. I decided to descend down the south side and ended up, back at the beginning of the loop. I went CCW, this time. Following the gps route on my Garmin had me blazing through the desert (no trail evident) for a brief time before transitioning to a road. The route follows the road, going past Green Thumb and curving around to the north side of peak 2297. As I got to the north side, I left the road and followed a solid use trail that tied into trail 309. Following 309 south, brought me back to where I had left to summit 2297. At this point, I had done the Keyhole Arch Loop.

I decided to do some exploring of the area. From the saddle I dropped into wash that was north of peak 2297. There were quite a few use trails that bounced between the wash and the nearby road to the north and east. In this area was Keyhole Arch and I followed a well used trail to take a look. There was also a small canyon wash that fed into this bigger wash. There was a brief section of stone walls that created an enclosed feeling. Bikers had discovered it and it looked like they created a nice little track in the area. After exploring the area, I took trail 309 back to the TH.

Fun area. I didn’t see anyone, except for one motorbike. No wildlife. Never got that far from the TH, but still got some miles with all the gridding.

The Keyhole Arch Loop as described in the description really doesn’t exist any longer. It has been incorporated and lost in the morass of other trails and roads. That being said the Keyhole still exists and is an easy visit. The Bulldog Rec area has created about 8 new trails in this area. One of them, trail 309, the Tarantula Trail does a nice job of circumventing part of peak 2297 and there are other “new” trails that create a loop similar to the Keyhole Arch description. (You’ll notice that I put “new” in quotation marks. I have a feeling that these trails have been around for quite awhile, but they have been adopted and signed by the Bulldog Rec area.

My last day of hiking I would do a short 7 mile hike in the Goldfields. This would be a smorgasbord of trails around Keyhole Arch. I started from the Bulldog Canyon Trail Head and went east along the Blue Ridge trail then a couple of trails that would take me around Keyhole Arch returning on a couple other trails to my start point. This is a series of trails that I will probably never do again because it is in an off road use area and many of the trails are just torn up dirt tracks that are used by off road vehicles and motorcycles. There were portions around keyhole Arch (Keyhole Arch Loop Trail) that were along actual trails and were pretty nice. The rock formations in this area are quite interesting and made the hike tolerable. I had never been on these trails and last time Ginny and I were in this area I mentioned that it would be nice to check it out. I would have to find another route to get to the Keyhole Arch to avoid the off road area. I finished this hike around noon and headed back to Tucson. I managed to get in 33 miles on this 3 day excursion, it’s not the 60 I would of done a few years ago but I will blame it on COVID since everything else is blamed on that.

Did a big loop from the Hackamore Road lot. Went up to Trumpet Arch, Echo Arch and Keyhole Arch. There are so many intersecting trails in the area. Easy bushwhack for the final mile up to Trumpet Arch.

I hadn't spent much time hiking in the Goldfields before today, but I knew there was a lot of beautiful scenery out there, so I was excited for a longer hike. It's tough to quickly put together a route without knowing the area very well since there are a maze of trails, roads, washes, and multiple trailheads, but I ended up mapping out a loop of ~13 miles, then tacked on some spurs to a few of the arches near the route.

We parked at Bulldog Canyon Gate at the end of Cactus Road and started the loop clockwise along FR 10. Our first destination was a quick spur up to Mask Arch, a nice, easily accessible natural window along the northern ridgeline overlooking Dome Mountain. We followed some of the washes and jeep roads through Bulldog Canyon, and when we crested a small ridge, the views of Four Peaks were stunning. I hadn't realized that it had snowed much up there, but the peaks were covered in white, with the snow extending quite a way down the mountains. The peaks were shrouded in wisps of clouds, and it was a beautiful contrast with the saguaros and desert landscape in the foreground--it looked like an entirely different world on the horizon.

We took another detour over to Twin Arches, and along the way we saw at least 15-20 javelina running in small groups on the hillsides nearby--I'd never seen so many at one time. The arches were another nice feature, and the views to the southeast toward the Superstitions and Weaver's Needle were fantastic.

Our next destination was Top Hat, and we got some pictures at Palo Verde Arch on the way up. The arch was actually a double, with a small window in the rock just below the larger opening. We enjoyed more great views of Four Peaks and the shifting clouds over the Mazatzals on way to the summit. I signed the register at the top and recognized some familiar HAZ names. The benchmark at the top says "Weeks" on it, and the topo map says the same thing--if anyone knows the history behind that, feel free to comment :). The 360° views from the top were tough to beat. [ youtube video ]

We made our way down a drainage to the east and hiked over to Cottonwood Spring, which had a trickle of water spilling over a full collection tank. From there, we headed toward Keyhole Arch, with more views of the Superstitions along the way. There was a lot of trash out in the desert along that stretch, including an old mattress, multiple large white bags full of something, and even some roofing materials...why anyone would go to the trouble to haul trash all the way out there is a mystery. The large rock outcropping near Keyhole Arch was covered in graffiti, which was disappointing to see, but Keyhole was a nice spot, with a natural window in the cave and a rock arch overhead.

A lot of the snow had melted off of Four Peaks by afternoon, and the clouds had mostly cleared around the peaks, so we had a different view as we finished off the loop, passing near Blue Ridge and Saddle Rock before returning to Bulldog Canyon Gate. The hike exceeded my expectations--we saw five arches (Mask, Twin Arches, Palo Verde, Keyhole), visited the Top Hat summit and Cottonwood Spring, and had fantastic views of Four Peaks and the Superstitions all day, not to mention the wildlife. The Goldfields are definitely an underrated area, a short drive from Phoenix and nowhere near the crowds of the Superstitions. There was a fair amount of ATV traffic, but we didn't see any other hikers all day in almost 15 miles of hiking.

Hike w/ kids. Wanted a short jaunt in AJ before visiting grandparents, this fit the bill and had a lot more solitude than my usual gotos from First Water area. Route was a mix of dirt road and motorbike singletrack and horse trail and wash... The desert is crisscrossed with options (and has a lot of litter) so close to a trailhead. Kids were well-behaved and sure-footed after such a long lapse since our last outing, they earned their ice cream after this one. Keyhole Arch was half-walled off and there was signs of a campfire in it... maybe someone spent a cold night huddled in there recently? Okay area, think we need to venture a few more miles in from this trailhead to get to the good stuff.

What he said: [ triplog ]

I can't think of much to add but I will.
It was a little windy/cool to start but after the unplanned summit of Top Hat, the sun pretty much stayed out and the breeze subsided. I'm glad we chose to summit Top Hat when we did as I doubt I would have toward the end. As summits go it really is pretty easy especially the way we took using the bedrock for traction for 1/2 of it. The views are surely worth the climb!

and then the ridge walk down to Palo Verde Arch was another unplanned bonus for "as long as we're up here". You can get some nice pictures through both sides of the arch. Now from here down to Weeks Wash was a whole other ball game. It is difficult between the rolly poly rocks and the downess of it. Kelly and I remembered that from one of our hikes we did previous in this area.

The rest of the hike toward Pedestal Arch was in and out and along some drainages with a path for some parts of it. We followed the track where you have to go alongside a wash (north), thru it and then back (south) as you go back toward the drainage and up it toward Pedestal. We didn't enjoy that part too much as you hate not going in a somewhat straight line. We ventured up the drainage and this is when I started to lose most of my energy and steam. We had started at 8:45 and it was now almost 1:00 PM without a break or snack. I usually need a break and/or snack around the 5 mile mark.

I kept wanting to pullover for just a moment to refuel before finishing the ascent but that wasn't in the cards and just when I was ready to give up the ghost Kelly says from what looked to be a top area, "sit down for a moment and have a snack as you will want to have lunch at the Arch". She says, "you'll be sorry if you don't and you're so close". She and/or Ray were willing to carry my pack... but that wasn't the issue. I just needed a little fuel. Well Kelly hasn't steered me wrong yet so after a couple bites of my Payday and drinking some coconut water, up I went and there it was :y: . Whew!

Now that the drama for the day was over, we enjoyed the company, the views and the weather. Kelly ventured south over to the top of a little mountain side and I joined her. As I was peaking over the side and she was running from a bee, I noticed the terrain looked a lot better for our descent so we decided to give that a try. It was a good choice. I hope that made up for the whining earlier. We made our way down to the drainage and took a bit of a shortcut from earlier and headed over for the next waypoint I had marked as "Must See". We hiked up to what I dubbed the Squishing Boulder so Kelly could see how far she could go but she got chock-stoned so had to come back the way she had started. Next it was to the Tunnel and that was really cool. We spotted some grinding holes too.

We discussed following Mark's route to the south but because of time limitations and not knowing the area, we went back the way we came. We found the Figure 8 intersection up thru some bedrock but decided due to time once again to continue the way we came. It was a pretty hike back as the sun was lighting up the golden rock. We took a break below Top Hat before finishing off the hike with some great views toward the sun lighting up the Four Peaks, Weavers Needle and the Western Supes. We did have to pull aside for what seemed a mass exodus of ATVs. We were glad to be able to finally pull off the road.

At the TH we all had a beer and enjoyed watching the sunset change the colors of the sky on various views around us. Ray headed home and Kelly and I went to Mammoth Steakhouse for some burgers and coffee. FYI - My sirloin burger was good but the Mammoth burger is much better. The service was a little slow this time but I like the place and it's close and open until 8. We even got fiddled at. Thx for a great hike as always Kelly. You got me up another peak. This is my second hike with Ray and second peak.

1-13-2017 I only have one video up on youtube so far, two others are done in production with a few more to complete. I set out not wanting to film too much but alas, when it's so beautiful out there, it's hard not to. I also got carried away with the pictures but like Kelly says, I am a Documentarian... I'm thinking of changing it to Tibbernarian  .

Thank goodness for the long weekend, here are the videos:

Had a little break in the weather, only 100 degrees (LOL) so me and the pooch headed for this trail around 5pm. Packsaddle road is right off of the Apache Trail, well before you really get into the thick of it. Its easy to miss so try and use your GPS.

The road leading to the trail is unpaved after a short time. Good condition for most any vehicles, just watch the potholes. If you have a 4WD, you can actually go beyond the gate. There are TONS of jeep trails going all over the place. Jazz and I hiked from the gate, following the trail guide. The roads do get very rough so you may have to decide how far to go in your vehicle.

Without meaning to, we went in the opposite direction as described, counter-clockwise. I guess its just as well cause the arch is much closer to this end. You will need to follow your map cause there are so many jeep trails you can easily get off on the wrong one. That being said, the trail I followed was not really going along the road at points. I had to bushwhack some to get back on. Do not go off the road/s. You will not be able to get far if you do, as I found out. Because I wasted so much time re-routing back, we didn't make the whole loop. We only had limited light and it was still pretty hot so we made it up to what I believe is the prominent rock formation, Green Thumb. From there I can easily see the Keyhole. I'm not sure if it was a real arch, seemed more like some boulders fallen together making a keyhole in the middle?

NOTE: The area is beautiful, and quiet, that is if there are no ATV's out. I didn't see or hear any for the first hour. Then I heard the ATV's much before I saw them. This area is obviously an ATV heaven. Unfortunately, there are signs of past gatherings in a huge open area where a fire pit was filled with odd things like a car engine, lamp, and other junk. Too bad really.

Since it was the middle of the summer, I guess I was spared hordes of ATV's but since they are so loud, even one will instantly destroy the peace. I'd still like to go back sometime and finish the loop cause it is a gorgeous area with the majestic Superstition in constant view.

Nice hike in the Goldfield Mountains on Christmas Eve Day which included a mix of trail, road, and off-trail hiking. Had lunch at Cottonwood Spring area which was like an oasis in the desert. Really enjoyed the Blue Ridge area, the hike up Top Hat, and the trail portion of Bulldog Canyon.

The evening before I failed to complete the Bulldog Canyon Loop because I got busy scrambling around on boulders. I lost my sunglasses in the process too. So I cancelled my plans to go out to Queen Valley and returned to the Goldfields instead. I climbed up the same drainage I was in the day before, but found no sign of my Foster Grants. I circled around Saddle Rock and dropped down into the quarry. Then I decided to extend the hike by heading over to Keyhole Arch and Green Thumb. There was a western diamondback and a horned lizard on this trail and I gummoed both for a while. Then it was back to completing the loop before it got too hot.

Hiked up as far as Keyhole Arch then back over the top of the hill to the parking area. Very leisurely walk-- I had a 6 year old in tow, so I had to keep it under control so as not to wear him out completely.

Although I enjoyed the solitude, the last portion of the hike was almost heartbreaking. There was a ton of garbage along the trial between Green Thumb and the trailhead (beer bottles, soda cans, chewing tobacco tins) and some moron has taken to defacing Green Thumb with graffitti. I say if you're gonna do this hike, do it counterclockwise. That way you get the nastiness out of the way first.

While many others were engaged in the frustration of Black Friday frenzy, I opted for the peaceful relaxation of a nearby trail. The Keyhole Arch loop provided the perfect opportunity to work off some of yesterday's turkey, enjoy the cold dawn followed by warming sunshine as it rose in the east, and avoid the crowds. Only jackrabbits, birds and a few desert rodents notice our presence on an otherwise popular trail for winter visitors (only a few were just starting out as I completed my loop).
