The amount of unnecessary tat discovered on route was disconcerting. We removed some but it would need another trip to clean and setup to a tolerable degree. Optimistically, the main bolt/ring for the west side rap that Dave & I added twenty years ago is holding up nicely, albeit not as level as I'd prefer but that doesn't warrant redoing (yet). :)

Arrived at Peralta a little later in the morning to a full parking lot. Had to park in one of the lower overflow parking areas.

Per usual, most were going up Peralta, so after my turn off on Bluff Springs, I ensured separation from the crowds.

A trail crew was doing some nice maintenance on the lower part of the climb.

Lots of water in Barks and on Terrapin. Passed a few day hikers/trail runners and a backpacking couple headed to Charlebois.

I had never taken the crosscut before. The turn off is well marked, and the route is pretty distinct—especially on the east side.

Great views of the Needle in the valley along the crosscut.

Coming down the west side, at what I’ll call “dog rock,” there’s a choice to head down the northern flank of the drainage, which I did. After a bit, I consulted the gps track I had downloaded and realized that route went down the southern flank. That said, the northern flank was pretty well traveled and marked.

The return on Peralta was pretty routine.

A few sprinkles here and there, but I avoided any real rain until after I was back on the road home.

mike and i got going from peralta around 0915
he had never been on the crosscut trail so we did the loop starting up bluff springs trail
met a couple from canada and hiked with them until we turned off at terrapin
the crosscut trail was in good enough condition and easy to follow
some catclaw on the western half
we saw a total of five people on the entire hike
some erosion evident on all the trails
vegetation was actually green
fun day, nice to get out with mike
reminisced a bit about climbs on carney springs wall, barks canyon wall and weaver's needle that we had done together :)

Perfect cinco de drinco weather out there established a mandatory outdoor assessment of conditions. A couple of cars in the lot, two hikers on their last breaths as we started out, and not a sign of another soul the rest of the day. Cloudiness, a few sprinkles, a cool breeze, and temps flirting with 60.

Yesterday it had rained hard here, with evident erosion from recent surface flows. Some puddles remained in all the favored locations.

This Meetup was far more adventurous than the norm. Even parked right up front at Peralta TH! Guess the state of the road following the storms and threatening skies kept many away. 😀

The majority of the sign ups bolted leaving only the most motivated. With water flowing along the trail and the fewest people I've seen here, off to a fabulous start. The saddle was only the beginning for us.

Next was the steep climb up Weaver's as far as 1 can venture without gear. Then formed an extended loop traversing rarely used trails. RF needed through entire stretches. Was scheduled to be Peralta-1st Water yet ended up being better! 😎

Beautiful day to be out hiking!! So glad to try a new trail! I've never been on crosscut, so decided to try it today. So glad to have read the @DarthStiller triplog saying that the official route is not accurate for the descent to Peralta. I used the mentioned route from @adilling, and it was perfect! Thank you! 😁 The crosscut trail was super easy to find and is well defined the entire length from terrapin to Peralta. Follow the cairns when descending to Peralta and also use @adilling route.

Parking lot was almost full on arrival to Peralta Trailhead. We headed out and saw no one on bluff spring, terrapin, or the crosscut. We saw our first people on Peralta right at the crosscut junction. We saw 2 more single hikers on Peralta before Fremont saddle. After a snack, we headed down on cave and saw 2 more people at devil's slide. They were having trouble finding a way up. They watched us come down, but after a while, they gave up and turned around. :(

Beautiful day for a hike if a bit hot for a December day! 😁😁😁

A fantastic loop with gorgeous views of this area of the superstitions. Few other hikers encountered - a large bonus given how full the parking lot was and the number of vehicles in the "caravan" out Peralta Road on our way out.

It has been decades since I've hiked in the superstitions, and it's nice to be reacquainting myself with the area. Many years ago, I'd hiked the full loop around Weaver's Needle - the Crosscut makes for a shorter day, and gains some up close views of the rocky wonderland at the base of Weaver's Needle. Weaver's Crosscut was surprisingly easy to follow - we followed the obvious path, which deviated from the pre-downloaded route (I downloaded from another app/site). Cave Trail was harder to follow in some areas (especially post the Devil's Slide feature) where it traveled on areas of rock escarpments. I admit I would not have anticipated the Devil's Slide was a part of the route if not for my hiking partner, who had hiked the trail previously. If hiking on the weekend and looking to escape the traffic on Peralta, Cave was a welcome alternate route though certainly not for everyone given the need for route finding and navigating the Devil's Slide feature.

I've never hiked the Weaver's crosscut before, mainly because I thought it was a bushwhack with no trail. Turns out there is a trail and it's pretty easy to follow. The views along there are also really nice.

I did the loop counterclockwise from the Peralta TH, heading up Bluff Springs Trail in the dark. Looking back I could see the stream of headlights along Peralta Road with the hordes heading in. The first sunlight that hit me was on the Terrapin Trail, soon after I saw a deer up ahead on the trail.

The junction with the crosscut and Terrapin is marked pretty well with a cairn and the trail is very well defined. The little hidden valley along that trail reminds me of the hidden valley in South Mountain. It was really cool to get new views of Weaver's Needle, not to mention the closest views I've ever had.

I downloaded 3 tracks that were posted, and the were all nearly identical. The last section heading down to the Peralta Trail, I started to follow the trail I was on, but I noticed that it was going off track, heading north, and going downhill fast. I didn't want to overcommit if I had to bail with a big climb back up, so I followed the track(s). That descent has no trail whatsoever, and it's a pretty rough bushwhack. There was a group of people at the junction of the crosscut and Peralta, two of which were heading up a trail. When I talked to the other 3 who sat and waited on Peralta, they told me those other 2 hikers were headed up the crosscut, so I'm thinking I should have stayed on that trail. Another reason to head back and do this again one day.

The hike back was the usual. There was a huge group of very loud tourists at Freemont Saddle posing for pictures and making a huge racket. Definitely in violation of the 15 person group limit. The traffic on Peralta after that was a pain. I was the fastest hiker of everyone going in my direction, which I'm not used to.

There was a volunteer at the trailhead greeting everyone and giving info. I told on the illegal group of tourists, at which point he emphasized his volunteer status. Still a really nice hike, perfect weather.

Jason needed to knock out the Weavers Needle Crosscut trail to finish up his quest for hiking every trail in the wilderness. This was one of the last ones.

I have done this 2x prior, the first time coming from Peralta and going over the hump over to Terrapin. The second time, after remembering the nasty climb up from the other direction, I wisely opted to do the Terrapin to Peralta route. When Jason asked to do this one, counterclockwise was the way to go.

We started right about sunrise and headed up Bluff Springs. The temps were very pleasant, but there was a little humidity. The usual huffing and puffing up cardiac hill and then down towards Barks Creek/canyon. The trail was a little overgrown and when we made it to Barks Creek, the tall grass was insane. This area was roasted in the fires and the grass has returned with a vengeance. There was a bunch of brittlebush blooming all along the hillsides and over towards Bluff Springs Mountain.

Terrapin was surprisingly less overgrown, but tons of grass as well. We made it to the Crosscut junction and started up the first little saddle. The path is getting clearer and clearer. I love the view of the Needle from the east side of this trail. You get the entire peak, from base to top from the little valley that you cross before you climb up to the last notch/saddle.

The trail started getting less clear, but still a trail. We made it up to the 2nd saddle and started down. We took a little break and pulled as many of the foxtails out of our socks as we could. It was Grass-a-palooza up along this one as well. The hike down to Peralta was as steep as I remember. It was cairned and the trail was kinda-sorta easy to follow.

We came across a lone hiker looking for the trail to Weavers Needle just before we made it to the Peralta junction. She didn’t look like a climber and we pointed her in the direction of the base trail. We saw her later coming down Peralta trail near the trailhead. Apparently, she gave up and just hiked back up Peralta. We also encountered a couple of other hikers near the saddle.

By the time we made it to the Fremont saddle and had a little break, the cool air of the morning had given way to sunny and hot. The hike down Peralta was the usual Stairmaster. Lots of brittlebush and orange globemallows. There was a trickle of hikers going up and few coming down along the way. The hiking season in the western Supes is surely slowing down.

This was the first “rough” hike I have attempted since injuring my Achilles a few months ago. I was really slow going up and not very fast going down. But, in spite of a little tightness, it did ok. No serious pains later in the day or this morning as I type up this triplog. Just in time for the 100’s down here in the valley.

A nice loop and a great day out in the Superstitions.

Needing to check the Crosscut trail off my 'list' Andy put this loop together going CCW. Got to the Peralta TH just after 5:30am with only a couple of cars in the parking lot and none in the Wave Cave lot. I guess its too hot for the TicToker's . Started up my always favorite Cardiac Hill and made our way down to Barks Canyon. There were a couple of smaller pools there and that would be the only water we would see all day, everything else was dried up. I have never seen so much grass in Barks. The Foxtails and Buffel grass at times were chest high and without gaiters, were a real pain for my shoes and socks. We headed up Terrapin and made the turn up to the first saddle on the Crosscut. While a little rocky and steep this section of the trail was in great shape and easy to follow. Once in the canyon past the first saddle the trail became hit and miss with the grass hiding a good amount of it. Once at the top of the second saddle we took a break which gave me a chance to clean the foxtails out of my shoes and socks. Once past the second saddle, it was steep and slippery but carins directed us down to East Boulder Canyon. We came upon our first person of the day as we neared the Peralta Trail junction. A solo hiker looking for a way to get closer to Weavers Needle. We directed her to the carins marking the way up for the climbers and she continued on. Once we were in East Boulder Canyon the winds picked up which made for a nicer climb up to Freemont Saddle. The hike from the saddle was long and hot, it seemed to drag on for forever. Saw a couple of people up on the saddle and a couple others coming up but the crowd was much thinner with the hotter temps. Thanks Andy for the invite to this one.

A trip to the Supes to see the water and get some shots of the needle. The Terrapin trail was easy to follow pending the brush growth from the recent rains. I didn't see any hikers on the Bluff Spring/Terrapin/Crosscut leg but many hikers on Peralta trail. The weather was nice and the trailhead was busy. Peralta road was a bit muddy in parts so had to get the hose out when I got home. The muddy water running down the street was awesome.

john suggested we do something in the superstitions today, specifically weaver's needle crosscut
bluff spring, terrapin, crosscut, peralta
same route that @rayhuston did recently
we got going around 0630 or so
cloud cover the entire hike, even a few raindrops
trails were in good condition and there was not much catclaw
saw just one other hiker until we hit fremont saddle
fun hike, nice to be back in the supes
thanks, john

Since we are both now retired, Kelly and I decided we have plenty of time to go hike in the Superstitions. I suggested the Weavers Needle Crosscut trail which I hadn't been on since 2009.
We started up Bluff Springs trail on an overcast morning much to our delight. We poked around a couple small mines along the way. Just over a half mile on the Terrapin we exited to the crossover trail at a well cairned junction. This trail goes through some really cool rock formations ending up joining the Peralta trail. We hiked up to Fremont Saddle taking a break listening to hen party. Wow.
Saw quite a few folks on the way back down to the trailhead.
Fun hike. Thanks for driving Kelly! :)

When another volunteer and I were checking water sources on Halloween, we decided to add this hike to our schedule. We hiked in a ccw direction. Bluff Spring to Terrapin, then the crosscut trail, back on Peralta.

It’s a fun loop, but cat’s claw can be awful through the crosscut section. It was in better shape than expected. You might still get nicked in the bob and weave sections if you’re wearing shorts and T’s. Dave wore shorts but I didn’t see any blood and heard only a couple of ouches.

The official route down past “the slab of rock on the left” (from Fritski’s guide) that I’d taken before was impeded by a large boulder near the slab. We saw a different route down so we took that instead. The newer route descends a little farther NW before turning back to the south. It’s probably the better route now.

Terrapin can also be a cat’s claw challenge in places but most of those areas have been bypassed in recent years. Terrapin is looking good otherwise. Bluff Spring and Peralta are decent; both are getting some attention in the next couple of weeks.

Fun day but the last few miles felt warmer than the high of 77 I saw in the weather forecast.

Essentially this route is the same as the Miners Needle Loop, but tacks on some of the Terrapin Trail and the Weavers Needle Crosscut. I've probably done the MNL over fifty times, but this morning it was definitely an excersise in character building by completing this hike when the Saguaro blooms are starting to drop, regardless if one adds the Bluff Saddle leg or not. There were a bunch of dying, overgrown bushes and unending spiderwebs to deal with along the way, but surprisingly, no viper sightings. We flushed five deer total, on two separate occasions, before the Bluff Springs junction. Not as many gnats and not as hot as expected because of the nice, constant eastern breezes. Dese only blew out one pad and poked her eye, but she'll recover quickly as usual. : wink :

Kelly and I got started at 0800 just as the rain and low clouds were clearing out—perfect timing. Headed up Peralta, carefully picking our way over the wet rocks. Saw where one good sized boulder recently rolled onto the trail at about 1.75 miles. Lots of running water covering the trail on the north side of Fremont Saddle.

Headed east on Dutchman, enjoying the sights of the healthy saguaros on the slopes of Black Top Mesa. Again, more water.

Headed south up Terrapin. There were a couple of tricky creek crossings, and I took my shoes off for one to walk directly across since it seemed easier than trying to dodge catclaw. Steep climb in a few places, and some loose rock, but most of the vegetation has been recently cleared from the edges of the trail.

As we reached the turn for the Crosscut, dark clouds had suddenly formed. Rain seemed possible, but held off, although the clouds were dramatic. The Crosscut was fun, and generally easy to follow until the far western end. Just enough catclaw to where I was glad I wore pants rather than shorts.

Once heading back south on Peralta, we chatted with a few hikers who weren’t quite sure of where they were going. At Fremont Saddle, we headed over to Cave Trail. Wet rocks in several places added to the fun. Quick stop at the cave, then a careful descent through the steepest spots. After that, it was mostly smooth sailing down to Bluff Springs Trail, which we took back to the trailhead.

Great day, and great views for the entire hike. Thanks for putting this loop together, Kelly.

linda suggested we do another hike in the supes today
we had talked about weaver's needle loop, but decided to modify the route a bit
got to peralta around 0800, just as it quit raining
we started with all of peralta trail, then dutchman and part of terrapin
i had never been on weaver's crosscut, so cut west from terrapin
thought this entire area was very scenic
the east end is very well defined and clear
the west is a little harder to follow and more overgrown with some catclaw
great views up close of weaver's needle and other cool rock formations
back up to fremont saddle on peralta, then we took the cave trail to finish
i hadn't been on most of these trails in five years so it was nice to hike them again
there was water flowing in every drainage and sometimes on the trails
a few challenging creek crossings
we saw a couple of waterfalls in peralta canyon
weather was perfect: cool temps, very little breeze
we saw maybe a half dozen people all day except for right at fremont saddle
good mileage and elevation gain on the loop
thanks linda, really enjoyed this one :)

Wanted to check out the Cave Trail again, and view the needle. We decided to make a Balloon out of it. Wanted to avoid the Siphon Draw (I hate that hike) so headed up via the Cave route, so much better views.. A bit more work, but well worth it. We also headed out to the tree at the point in all the photos, and were planning on hitting Fremont Saddle and heading over to the Crosscut trail. Going back from the point I noticed a thin trail that looked like it might allow us to avoid backtracking to get to the trail to the crosscut. Sure enough, it drops down just after the saddle (Fine with me to avoid folks) and off to the cross cut we went.

Initial start on the crosscut section is a little rough, trail is not well marked, but after a little bit a thin trail appears, and it gets easier to follow. Once on the Terrapin intersection it's pretty straight forward. I really like this variation/hike. although there are some sections where the trail gets a little thin, we were able to follow the trail for probably about 95% of the time with the assistance of the GPS. I'll upload the track if anyone wants to follow it. I think this is one of the better hikes in this area, and the extra bonus is that you can avoid the crowds for a good percentage of the hike.

I slapped together this bridged figure-eight loop around Weaver's from First Water TH in 2018. It could be a true loop with Quarter Circle U Trail. Aylor's Arch is a great add-on option for either. However, we both voted for the core easier figure-eight today.

Second Water Trail #236 out and over Black Mesa Trail #241 basically hiked itself in the chilly morning air. Along the way, I recalled despising ascents in my inaugural years. I must have been a bigger crybaby back in the day, it's an eased ~500 ft ascent over miles up Black Mesa... lol Heading down to boulder basin it was apparent I was on a hike, needing to pay attention to footing. We passed a group of campers well off-trail. The pipedream of strangers running to offer crisp warm bacon mid-hike is still a dream.

Dutchman Trail #104 sandwiched between Palomino and Black Top Mesa was our bridge to the twin-loop figure-eight. It is the lushest stretch of the hike and in the top-two highlights. Which is cool because we got to travel it in both directions.

Weaver's Needle Crosscut is the show no matter how you arrive and tackle the gem.

Terrapin Trail #234 is catclaw-free and shows signs of recent maintenance. Bruce chatted with Rachel and fam for about four hours. It doesn't matter who we encounter, they all spawn from Michigan. Gasp... lol

Synopsis
Virtually all catclaw over the trail has been declawed from traffic, just smooth whips now.

We crossed paths with others about 1.5 dozen times, several were previous encounters. All except one group of 7-8 seemed to be full of life and having a great day. The aforementioned group, Team Excitement, must have lost a bet or been forced to backpack.

Recorded a loud Scrub-Jay. eBird said Woodhouse Scrub-Jay but it was a tiny sample, with a loud Curve-billed Thrasher nearby.

This was my first trip out of First Water TH since the 2020 Superstition Fire. The worst impression of the burn is the drive in. I solo looped Weaver's from Peralta TH last August on an uncharacteristically cool day. My impression stands. There are large torched areas. The overwhelming geology is still the core lure for me.

Wiry Lotus occasionally throughout. Nice displays of Fairy Duster. Several large swaths of verbena. Dessert Marigolds. The oddity was what we figured to be Wild Cucumber in several dry locations. Guessing it is Gila Manroot, also in the cucumber family. The visual difference is deeply lobed leaves vs wider lobed leaves.
