Nothing impressive, don’t understand how some of Warren’s Top 100 Hikes of Arizona ever made the list!

Happy 4th of July!

I noticed a geocache was hidden near the river crossing last May, so decided to go find it this morning. After finding the geocache, I continued past Slate Creek to where the trail reaches the road at the K-Mine operations, then turned around and headed back.

At the Agua Fria, I searched around for a place to rock hop across but didn't find one, so I took my shoes off and waded across. That took longer than I would have liked, and it was hot, so on the return, I just sloshed across. The cool water felt good on my feet, and it didn't take long for the bulk of the water to squish out.

I planned to hike all of the BCT beginning of April but bailed after a long first day reaching the Gloriana trailhead just off I-17 and the Bumblebee exit (triplog). Earlier this week with the upcoming cooler temperatures, my wife offered to drop me off where I left off to finish the trail.

We left home about 4:00 and headed up to Black Canyon City for the Friday Fish Fry at Chileens. We stopped at the Emery Henderson trailhead on the way where I cached a gallon of water. Fish and chips and beer really hit the spot.

After saying goodbye to my bride, I was on the trail about 5:25, earlier than I expected. The temperature was about perfect for walking; it was great to be on trail. I saw not a rattlesnake early on. Arrastre Creek wasn't flowing, but there were still large pools of water. Originally, I was hoping to reach and camp at Black Canyon Creek. It was still light when I got there so decided to continue on. The creek had good flow, so I took my shoes off and waded across. It finally started getting dark as I neared Soap Creek, so I pulled my headlamp out. Once at Soap Creek, set up camp a short distance up from the trail on the creek bed. There was a large moon and sleeping in the canyon sheltered me from it most of the night.

I set my alarm for 4:30 but didn't hear it and woke up at 5:00. I was on the trail at 5:30. I reached the first Agua Fria crossing and didn't see a spot to rock hop across, so I took my shoes off and waded. The water was ankle deep, so quite a lot less than the last time I tried to cross here. I continued on to the second crossing. Again, I took my shoes off and waded across. The river channel moved from the far bank some after the high flow this year, so that was interesting to see. I filled up my water before continuing.

When I reached the Little Pan Loop, I took the west side as I like it better than the east side. Probably because there's no road walking on the west. Not too far in I crossed a wash with a Mesquite tree providing shade, so I stopped and had lunch which consisted of a Complete Cookie, a Snickers bar, and a bottle of Gatorade; a nice quick 750 calories or so.

I reached the third Agua Fria crossing where I again took my shoes off and waded across. I kept them off as I drank a liter of water and filled my water to capacity. There were a few bottles of water cached at the Table Mesa trailhead. I thought about grabbing some, but I wasn't very far from where I filled up. It was also early enough in the day that I knew I would make it to Emery Henderson where I had water.

As usual for a Saturday, there was a lot of shooting going on in the Table Mesa area. I was happy when the popping faded away as I left the area.

I made it to Emery Henderson plenty of time before dark. I grabbed my water and went to a Ramada where I called my wife and ate dinner. I was close enough to home and had gone far enough, that I decided to spend the night. I knew the moon would be bright and being under the Ramada would help with sleeping.

I took my watch off to be able to hear the alarm, so I woke up at 4:30. It took me a bit longer to get out of camp dealing with water, etc., so I wasn't on trail until 5:15. Interestingly enough, I had to wait for traffic to cross New River Rd. There's nothing spectacular about BCT south of Emery Henderson except for the sunrises and wild burros. I was blessed with both.

From the end of the BCT (Carefree Hwy), I continued south on 51st Ave until Dove Valley Rd. Where I was not allowed to continue through the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Co chip plant construction. After talking to the guards, I headed east on Dove Valley to 43rd Ave where I turned south. I crossed under the 303 through the construction of new on/off ramps, where I reached a chain-link fence blocking access to the south. Climbing over seemed risky as I figured I'd slip and rip my leg open and bleed out. I continued west along the fence where two gates were open for the construction. With that, I was easily able to cross the barb-wire fence, then head cross country to 51st Ave, cross the CAP canal, go through Deem Hills and made it home 10 of 11:00.

I packed pretty light for this. I had a polycro groundsheet and no shelter. I had my Thermarest XLite and down quilt. I wore a pair of running shorts and a long-sleeved button up shirt. Besides that, I had an extra pair of socks, a wind jacket and a fleece hoody. No stove, I cold soaked Saturday's dinner. I'm guessing my pack weighed about 17 lbs. at the start with all my food and a gallon of water. It should have weighed 17.5, but I forgot my Fritos.

This was a pleasant surprise. There were still lots of flowers blooming, even some poppies and some Blue Richards (why can't we write their real name?). The Lupine were all dry but fun to see.

Well, the first Tuesday of the month means an additional 20% geezer discount at the Columbia Outlet Store in Anthem. Cathy and I decided to kill two birds and get in a hike while we were up in that area.
I used the HAZ hike finder and these two trails starting from the Black Canyon City Trailhead popped up.
Some photos posted by @FOTG made the decision easy. We also noticed that @rcorfman hikes these trails on a regular basis pertaining to his geocache locating.

We left the TH at a little after 10am and were quickly impressed with the trail conditions. Somebody's doing a very good job. The tread was in excellent shape on both trails. Less than 1 mile in the SloFolks passed a group of 4. Yeah, you read that right...we passed people. To be fair, they were probably tourists, and they probably had not ever hiked before, but hey, we don't know that for a fact. 8-[ Gotta take the win however you can. :-)

After the hike we went to the Columbia Store where Cathy found a new hiking shirt and a fleece vest for almost no money at all. She celebrated with some chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and I got to pick our lunch spot...In-N-Out Burger. Yum.

The plan was to find a new multi-cache. That's a geocache with multiple stages. The first stage was off the BCT a ways, before it crosses the Agua Fria. There's an old road going through an old mining claim to get there. I stepped off the BCT right after the gate so I wouldn't have to cross any fences. I found the first stage and, to my chagrin, saw the next stage was across the river. Normally that wouldn't be an issue but it's running pretty high right now. There was another geocache nearby so I went and found that, then went back to the BCT and down to the river, hoping to find a good place to cross. There was nothing I could get to where I wouldn't have to swim, so I decided to follow that old road to the other side and down and see what was over there. First, I went to below where the first stage was and checked that area out. I didn't see anything I liked, so headed farther south and saw an area that looked like it would probably be okay. I gave it a shot and things worked out well as I was just barely able to keep the old boys dry. I went and found the final stage for the cache, then crossed back at the same place, then took the old road back to the BCT, where I stopped to get all the sand out of my socks and shoes. Lots of runners were out training for the upcoming race on the BCT. They were just going back and forth from the trailhead to the river since they didn't want to ford it, so they asked where I crossed.

Early morning hike on the BCT. Got to the TH a little after 5am. Hard to believe it’s been close to 7 years since I last did this trail :o My body (left leg) is in rough shape, it jogged a bit of the trail until my knee started barking at me. Love this segment of the BCT. It has some of the views that the BCT has to offer. The first 2.5 miles of the trail have going around, up and over to reach the Agua Fria. The trail is well designed and interacts nicely with the landscape and the elevation change is incredibly gradual. The Agua was dry, though there were puddles of water. Did a little wandering trying to pick up the trail on the other side of the dry wash. Even though the river was dry, the growth on the banks was heavy so the trail was not immediately evident. (If one goes straight across, or angles to the right you’ll be fine.). Around the 3.5 mile mark the trail hits a road. To make matters worse Kay Mining has started exploratory drilling in the area and there are literally two drilling stations within a stone throw of the trail/road. The trail sign says there is a detour, but I don’t think it has changed that much. Followed the road (which is well signed with BCT signage) for about 1.5 before hitting a single track again. Shortly after joining the single track the trail passes two grave sites (about 4.45 miles in) and shortly after that there is a decent sized excavation site that is now shrouded in trees and brush. Both these sites are on the west side of the trail. The trail gains a little elevation as it makes its way to Soap Creek Rd., but not as much as I “thought I remembered.” Enjoyed the the views looking over Black Canyon City. Would have been nicer with better air quality. Hit Soap Creek Road and returned the way I came. Nice day for a hike, though the air was lousy. Temps were in the 70’s and 80’s for the duration of the hike and there was a nice intermittent breeze. Didn’t see anyone on the trail except for two vehicles utilizing the road. Wildlife included quite a few rabbit, lizards, a covey of quail, rattlesnake and a lone, but healthy looking doe. Great to revisit this area.

I wanted a reasonably lone hike to see how my fitness is returning after being sick last month. After yesterday and today, I'm pretty happy with how I'm doing.

Today was a really nice day. The temps were very nice when I started but it warmed up quickly. It wasn't too warm but warmer than I'd like for February.

I met a man after descending down towards the Agua Fria, but not yet to it, who was backpacking. I stopped and asked him how much of the trail he was doing. He thought the trail ends in Prescott (it ends at the Prescott NF boundary so I think that's why he thought that). He was curious where the water sources were, and I said just down there pointing to the Agua Fria. He was carrying 11 liters. Ugh. We chatted for a bit then I took off.

When I got to Kay Mine, there was a man there with a bunch of water for the trail race. He said the runners should be coming through in 20 minutes or so. I saw the first runner a few minutes before the trail reaches the road at Soap Creek, where another aid station was set up. The race was from Mayer to Black Canyon City.

After I crossed the road and dropped towards Soap Creek, I started seeing runners regularly.

When I reached Black Canyon Creek, I sat on a rock in the shade and drank a bottle of Gatorade, then headed back. A bit before reaching the road you take back to Kay Mine, I met the backpacker again. We talked a bunch more and I went over the water sources some more. I told him there were some pools of water at Soap Creek and Black Canyon Creek, but there was an aid station he could get water from instead. Besides, he still had a lot of the 11 liters left.

The trail is in really good condition right now. I don't know if that is from preparation for the race or not. Also the trail was the most defined I've ever seen it at the Agua Fria river crossing.

Started at Black Canyon City TH around 9:15. Had ulterior post-hike motives (more later). Comfortable and breezy to start, probably in the mid-50s. Had the fleece and jogging pants on. Probably about 10-12 cars in the parking lot. One hiker passed me shortly after I started, plus there was a group of mountain bikers. Didn't really see them since they must've taken the Horseshoe Bend trail, while I took K-Mine.

The K-mine/Horseshoe Bend junction is about 0.9 miles along the trail. Go left for Horseshoe Bend, right for K-Mine. K-Mine goes another .25 mile before beginning a gradual downhill switchback for about .75 mile. There's gates at 1.25, 2.25 and 3 miles...remember to close them after going through. At about 3.25 miles there's some kind of mineral exploration going on, and there's a detour along the Kay Mine road. Nice views of the surrounding hills and Black Canyon City area at the 3.5 mile mark.

Highlight of the trip was about 2 miles in where I saw a cardinal. Wish I could get better photos, but you can only get so close and a camera phone doesn't take tremendous pics from a distance, even with zoom. I tried to take two photos, and one turned out. Lots of saguaros and staghorn cholla at the start, along with berry bushes.

At about 2.4 miles you cross Slate Creek. There was actually water running in the creek, had to cross stepping from stone to stone. Nice area to take a brief break.

I passed about 5-6 people the entire route. One hiker at the start, absolutely no one on K-Mine. I'm thinking this would be a wonderful place to turn an ankle or something. At least I could get reception on my phone. Passed a couple hikers, a mountain biker and a jogger on the way back after getting off the K-Mine trail. The beauty of getting away from everything and everyone!

Oh, yeah, the ulterior motive. Rock Springs Cafe is just down the road. Since I can't get to Mom's Pies in Julian, CA, and get punches on my frequent flyer card, I had to settle for lunch and picking up a lemon meringue pie at the cafe. Not to worry, I'll find another hike to work off the pie. :-)

Did another segment heading northbound on the BCT. The best part of this trail is about 2 miles north of the trailhead, up on a ridgeline. As you descend, there are varying views of the canyon below formed by the Agua Fria. The Agua Fria makes a huge horseshoe bend. there's also a kind of a mesa or shelf just above the river after you get down off the ridgeline.

Crossing the river was a little tricky. There's no obvious low spot and no rocks placed to keep your feet above the water. It was only ankle deep, but during wetter weather, this could be a problem trying to cross this. I grabbed a branch and did a bit of a tightrope walk along it, using my hiking poles to balance me. My feet still got a little wet, but i think those boots are finally done anyway. On the way back I threw one large river rock by the shore to try to get a little more footing.

I went a little further past Soap Creek Road. the track says 6 miles, but the odometer said 6.5. To get to my turnaround point from the north will probably be close to 15 miles RT when I get to that. I left a cairn there again to mark it when I come back. Just north of the road is a little mini canyon carved out by some stream. There were some cattle feeding there when I crossed.

Just south of Soap Creek Road the trail parallels the road before it crosses. I missed this and just took the road going northbound. On the way back the trail is easy to spot from it's actual crossing point, so I took that section on the way back. The official track seems to follow the road here and not this short section of trail.

Saw the first biker 10 miles in, and then the first hiker about 11 miles in. the last 2 miles I saw a few more hikers. Seems like people take short sections of the BCT from there as that trailhead is also for the High Desert Park.

Nice enjoying the cooler weather for a hike like this, didn't need as much water.

Everything was pretty much the same as any other time I've done this section of the BCT except that K-Mine has started operating a bit north of Slate Creek. There is now a minor detour around the work, then the road the BCT follows is being used by the mine, so it has been graded and is dusty. I had a truck pass me as I was heading north, and again when I was heading south. I was surprised they were working the mine on Superbowl Sunday. I'll post pictures of the two ends of where the road is being used and of the operation.

The guide and route were accurate, but I want to add these instructions on how to find the Soap Creek Trailhead:
To find the Soap Creek Rd. trailhead for the Black Canyon Trail, exit 1-17 and go left on Old Black Canyon Hwy. Take the first right turn onto Maggie Mine Rd. and drive about a mile. Turn left onto Maren Ave. which crosses Black Canyon Creek, then right onto Lisa Dr. Drive to the lowest point on this road where Soap Creek crosses the road. About 30 ft. south of the creek there is a dirt road that goes up steeply to the west. This is Soap Creek road, but there is no sign and it looks like a driveway for a house which is very close to it. This road crosses the Black Canyon Trail, marked by short, brown trail signs, about 0.2 mile from Lisa Dr. and there is plenty of room to park close to the trail crossing. On Oct. 31, 2019, the road was in good enough condition for any car to drive up it and looked like it was maintained. An alternative place to park is in the creek bed about 70 ft. west of Lisa Dr., where it is level and sandy with room to turn around. If you park in the creek bed and plan to hike south on the K-Mine segment from here, you should hike up the road rather than in the creek to get to the trail because the creek walls are very steep and brushy at the trail crossing.

I would also suggest checking at the visitor center in Black Canyon City regarding how much water is flowing in the Agua Fria River before starting. We didn't and were surprised at how much water is still flowing. We were a little hesitant to try jumping the stones laid across the narrowest crossing because they were barely visible and there was a small waterfall to jump across at the end of them. The rocks turned out to be stable and we made it across with dry feet. Once across the water it was very difficult to find the trail on the other side because it was totally overgrown with 8 ft. tall seep willow. It was a struggle getting through them. Look for a sandy, slightly less weedy spot just before a big patch of water in the river. I don't think this river crossing is ready for bicycles.

Since the mornings are getting nice, I decided to head out on the Black Canyon Trail today. Got on trail a bit past seven and finished quarter of noon. I hiked from Black Canyon City trailhead to Soap Creek. I took a short break at Soap Creek, then turned back. Originally I was thinking of heading to Black Canyon Creek but it was starting to warm up and I didn't feel like dealing with the warmer afternoon; it was hot enough when I finished. Trail was fine though there is some catclaw that could be trimmed back in places, especially around the Agua Fria and near the northern end of my route. A lot of brush has grown up around the Agua Fria since the last time I was there. That made getting through a bit of a pita. It was muddy too. Whatever, the rest of the trail was fun walking.

Finally able to get a longish hike in.

The route: Started at Black Canyon City trailhead, took Black Canyon Trail north to Soap Creek where I turned around and headed back.

Plenty of parking at the trailhead today, though there was a fair bit of vehicles there. I saw one couple heading back to the trailhead about halfway to the BCT junction. After that, I didn't see anyone except a lone Mt. Biker on the roads a bit north of Slate Creek. Interestingly, I saw him at about the same place on my return, which I assume was his return too.

Skipped rock hopping the Agua Fria at the first spot as it seemed a bit iffy that I'd make it without getting at least one foot wet, so I walked south a bit until it there was easy crossing. I wasn't so concerned about a wet foot on my return so just went right across no problem.

I made it to Soap Creek exactly 8 seconds after two hours. I sucked a Gatorade down and relaxed for five minutes and started heading back. About a half hour in on the return, I pulled out a Kind Bar and gulped it down. I hadn't had one since my last day on the PCT, so yum.

I thought I was slower on my return, but when I was heading up the last climb after crossing the Agua Fria, I knew I wasn't. I reached the junction after 3:45 so I knew I was faster and finished at exactly 4 hours, to the second.

Water at the Agua Fria, good flow. No water at Slate Creek and some pools below where the BCT crosses Soap Creek.

Black Canyon City TH to Soap Creek Rd
Best part of our hike. Heavy october rains likely has it greener than ever. After super lazy switchbacks it's horizontal ravine slicing with occasional views of Black Canyon City. The thought of which has intrigued myself ever since hearing of the BCT long long ago. Decent low-flow creek crossings aced by all. Lots of nice buckhorn cholla.

Soap Creek Rd to Crown King Rd - BCT
Wanderlust dropped a few notches. Enjoyed. Once, ought suffice for life. A few nice pockets, forgettable compared to above.

Crown King Rd to Bumble Bee on BCT
Majority is toast. Okay. Prefer other trails. Pop pop gunfire. Lots of trucks parked in dirt lots along the nearby road. Very little atv activity. A civilized West El Oso. Bradshaw views semi intriguing, rather be up in 'em.

Synopsis
All except maybe a half mile of trail around 2 miles in was good to great condition. That half mile was just baseball sized rock needing a rake crew. 3 mph for this distance speaks for itself.

Most trail users were mtn bikers today. With our group hikers came in second followed by runners. Equestrian on all signage, zero encountered. No sign of Russell the BCT valedictorian extraordinaire. Enjoyable day with the group in fab weather. I'd hit the first 6 miles again in a heartbeat.

Bruce was a trooper rolling his ankle in the first furlong. His luck had a sucker punch ending with a rock just smaller than a fist smacking his windshield in the last few miles back into the valley.

Fanny packed 2.3 quarts net, finished with 0.9 qt. Like the AZT 1 mi North = 2 mi trail.

We had a full house for our second sampling of the BCT. LP, Kacklin' Karl and Ray joined us on this one.

We set up the shuttle and started from the south at the Black Canyon Trailhead.
We were greeted at the TH by a man in a suit and tie and a woman in a dress, :-k as well as 2 young ladies from Alaska sleeping next to their car.

It was a brisk start, but felt good. The desert is real green from all the recent rains and the crossings all had some water in them. I enjoyed this hike more than I thought I would, with the highlights being the decent trail conditions and crossings of the river beds and numerous creeks. Fall was hanging on in spots.

We finished up by Bumble Bee, where Karl ticked off the neighbors.

Good hiking with the gang again

First time on the BCT. Bruce setup it up as a through hike with a short easy car shuttle before the hike. We woke up two mountain bikers from Alaska sleeping at the Black Canyon Trailhead as we arrived. Packed up and ready to go within the first 500 feet Bruce rolled his ankle. Said it was the worst ankle roll he’d ever had but he walked it off. Unfortunately, he had to walk it off for 18 plus miles.

First part of the BCT was filled with wide nicely graded switchbacks down to the Agua Fria River crossing. Lots of water in the creek but we managed to find an ok crossing. Up the other side the trail wanders in and out of side drainages. Being really good trail we knocked out the first 9 miles in 3 hours. About mile 10 we decided to take our lunch break on a saddle. We caught up to Alaska on the saddle who had passed us earlier also having lunch. They winter in Arizona and summer in Alaska….sounds like a solid strategy!

After lunch we continued on some more really nice trail. Out of the 18 plus miles the highlight was from about mile 6 to 12. This section was generally further from the highway and featured some lush desert landscapes especially with all the rain over past few months. However, after mile 13 we hiked into a burn area that continued for several miles. The trail also traversed back to the road around Bumble Bee trailhead so we had more traffic within earshot of the trail.

Last few miles were uneventful but we encountered more mountain bikers heading southbound. All told we ran into 4 mountain biker groups, half dozen trail runners and 1 hiker that I recall. Once back at the vehicle we all enjoyed a beverage to cap off the hike :D

Decided to go to Sedona for the weekend, well I needed to go somewhere as my wife was having an art studio tour this weekend and preferred I was out of the way.Instead of waiting to get to Sedona to hike thought I would stop in Black Canyon City and try out the Black Canyon Trail. My nephew and his wife that live in Michigan were thinking of doing an Aravapai running event in February on this trail so it had my curiosity aroused. About 4 cars at the large trailhead ,one pit toilet, signed the register and went through the first of 3 gates before the river crossing, saw 2 other hikers returning on the northbound section of the BCT. Not long after ascending the first ridge was a bench placed for a nice view to the south of the Agua Fria River I presume the horseshoe bar. Less than a mile from the first gate took the northbound fork of the north south trail junction. The trail is well maintained and free of vegetation, lots of quartz rocks scattered about. The trail descends off the ridge down toward the river ,footing is secure and not too steep, array of old cow pies but no cows, mine claim sign noted, needed a pen to fill in the blanks. The river crossing was accomplished with dry socks thanks to convienantly positioned rocks. The riverbed is quite wide but flowing water only in a small portion, there was a wide pool ,above where I crossed ,with very nice reflections, the flow over the rocks made an audible relaxing call to take a break here and listen. After finding the continuation of the trail on the other side began ascending along a wash and continued along another mile past the river crossing decided it was time to turn back. As there is no shade on this trail it would not be advisable in hot weather, saw a desert tortoise speeding across the trail on the way back. As a bonus the trailhead is very close to the Rock Springs cafe, snagged a slice of coconut cream to go. For the second treat of the day stopped in Cornville to check out the confluence of Oak Creek and Verde River ,will include photos with this triplog, thanks to Joe Bartels excellent driving directions, the roads are not well maintained though and I would suggest a high clearance vehicle.

I've been trying some minimilist shoes (Xero Shoes' TerraFlex) and wanted to take them on a longish hike to see how my feet do. I'd put 102 miles on the shoes with my longest days just over 10 miles. In a month I'll be departing on a long distance hike and am deciding whether to go with these or the Altra Lone Peaks I've been rocking for the past couple of years. My feet were definitely more tired with the TerraFlex but that may be temporary. Still thinking.

So the trail is in good shape. There seems to have been some rock moving/trail smoothing going on just south of the Soap Creek road junction. That's the rockiest part of the whole BCT so it was nice to see some work being done there. One thing I was disappointed about is that since the last time I was out here (last November) someone painted orange arrows/marks on the rocks crossing the Agua Fria riverbed. Totally uncalled for and actually takes one in a sub-optimum path. Ugh.

The temps seemed to be warmer than the advertised high of low 80s but I survived. Was definitely ready for a cold drink near the end though. I didn't see too much in the wildlife department other than the usual lizards, a couple of large coveys of quail, and vultures soaring. I did spot a pair of cardinals though. That's always a pleasure.

My third northbound section of the Black Canyon Trail was another one-day trip from Black Canyon City Trailhead just behind Rock Springs, AZ and finishing at the Gloriana Mine Trailhead on Crown King Road just south of Bumble Bee. My brother-in-law Todd joined me on this next passage, looking to hit his single-day personal record for mileage in one hike. We shuttled my truck to the Gloriana Mine trailhead and drove back down to the Black Canyon City trailhead to get started at just after 8am.

The first climb out of the Black Canyon City trailhead takes you up to the east for about a mile and tops out at the T-junction in the actual trail itself. That's where you either make a right and head north, or left to go south. Right we go, and the views start paying off now that we're on high ground.

Within 3 miles of the trialhead, we descend down into the Agua Fria river canyon to make one crossing. A little route finding with the help of some colored ribbons on the brush leads us to an easy log crossing at a shady pool. We cross to the north side and take a break in the shade to enjoy this little oasis, knowing that the rest of the trail ahead is going to be much more exposed.

After the Agua Fria river, we climb back out of that canyon and start the usual ups-and-downs through the various desert drainages and small canyons. The trail quality itself is still very high quality, as it has been for the first 35 southernmost miles.

In this middle section, there is an old grave about a dozen yards off trail to the west. It's very visible due to the white quartz that marks it. No signage or names on anything, but there are a few old trail gifts left behind.

We spot some various mine tailing piles on the hills all around, and investigate one that was just west of the trail. The tailings were chalky grey, and behind them was a small rocky canyon that was overgrown with Palo Verde trees that were hiding a small mineshaft. It was about 2' tall and about 3' wide, just big enough to scoot through on your stomach if you so desired. I decided not to tempt the Hanta Virus gods that day and stayed out of it.

Moving along, we have intermittent views of Black Canyon City downhill to our east. At one point we drop quite close to the town as we cross the actual Black Canyon drainage, where we stop for lunch in the limited shade. An older couple was day hiking up the canyon, and they were the only other hikers we saw all day with the exception of a couple of trail runners.

Having studied the elevation profile beforehand, I knew we had our biggest climb at the 10 mile mark. The ascent goes up the west side of a rising valley, up and over a saddle to a second smaller climb before leveling out on its way to the finishing trailhead. The day was warming up pretty good by now, so we started the big climb.

Up we went, and quickly. I had pictured this climb as a 3 mile gradual ascent, but it was more like 1/2 mile of stairmaster. We pushed through it and took a much-needed rest at the top where there was a small saddle that gave view to the next climb. Hydrated again, we knocked out the next climb and were rewarded with a huge valley view below and the Bradshaws to our left.

I had read that there was a burn area near the end of this section, and I was actually very interested to see it. I find them fascinatingly beautiful, and not ugly as others might think. Remember that this is the natural cycle of nature, giving way to new life as areas such as this recover in a few years.

To get the chance to walk through a piece of terrain that was recently scorched by fire is rather unique. I've seen plenty of old burn areas that are recovering, but not one quite as fresh as this. The views in this area were not-of-this-world, that's for sure. Exposed red soil, fresh ashes still on the topsoil, an eerie silence to it all, and dead vegetation that somewhat resembles its original self. I could have spent hours here, but we were tired and ready to finish this section.

Not long after the burn area, we come around a system of winding drainages to see the parking lot at Gloriana Mine trailhead. It's always a moment of excitement to see your vehicle waiting there for you and knowing what you've just accomplished. We jump in my truck and head back to Rock Springs Cafe for a celebration beer and some gluttonous comfort food.
